VIN Decode
TL;DR - VIN = *X31XED46061*
Hey, everyone. I bought this supposed 1999 one-ton chassis for my dentside Powerstroke project a few weeks ago. When purchased, the surface rust was too heavy to see the VIN. However, seeing the engine crossmember “cradle” along with the D50 and 10.50 diff covers, I felt confident in buying it. Now that I am cleaning it up I found the VIN dot-stamped into the top of the passenger side frame like it should be. I was happy to see the “X31” bit of it but the rest of it isn’t making much sense to me when I read through various VIN decoding resources. Thanks in advance, Tyler https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...b320fa4cd.jpeg |

What I can come up with is as follows: - X31 - F350 4x4 SuperCab SRW - X - ? - E - Check digit - D - Ohio plant Anything I can find on an “X” engine code shows a 4.0 gas sixxer, which I don’t think would’ve been offered on a Super Duty. A quick internet search confirms but even on a fluke, I don’t see them having that as an option for a one-ton. so if there are two digits missing then it makes sense. - x31 - F350 - blank - - blank - - x - 1999 - e - Kentucky plant - d##### - sequence number |
Go look at the dash plate. It is your complete and "official" VIN. The number stamped on the frame is not.

Then why are you worried about a VIN?

AFAIK in order to register any subsequent assembled vehicle, OP will need to prove ownership. He should have gotten a title with the rolling chassis.
Otherwise, is it stolen? A salvage item? Have a lien on it? You might be able to make a runner out of it and no one ever asks. You might also sink a small fortune into it and have it seized if it comes up stolen. |

If I can’t find out, for whatever reason, then so be it. However, now I’m even more curious with the digits on the frame not adding up. |
