Oil Slinger

Truck is a 99.5 250 super duty 4x4. Needed to replace e-brakes so while im there its getting new bearings. Was careful taking the seal off not to break the slinger but there wasn't one. This is on the drivers side and has never been pulled apart since new. Called two different dealerships and they said i didnt have one for my truck ( gave them my vin). Iv ordered timken bearings so should i get the slinger and put it on anyway

Did you have a failure due to lack of lubrication ?

No, there were no leaks or failures. truck sat for a long time so i decided to change them

I thought they had a press in seal that was kind of self contained. At least it was like that on my 550 with Dana 135 axle.

5.9 Cummins is known as The Oil Slinger.

There are two seals, IIRC, one inner and one outer and there is also an oil slinger. IIRC, it is a steel ring and something makes me think it has teeth on the outer edge of it. I looked and didn't find any pictures of it in my files.

Edit: One seal on the inside and an O-ring on the axle on the outside.

I put new backing plates on a SRW 10.5....the seals are one piece, no additional slinger. Must be why they are like $30/ea.

I could have sworn it showed one on the 10.5" axle looking at the shop manual. I wondered if there was one missing as well off my Dana 80 when I did a hub job but apparently those really didn't come with one. Maybe it was revised at some point on the 10.5".

No mention of an oil slinger in the subsection 205-02C: Wheels Hubs and Bearings - Full Floating Axle - Dana as seen below in the list.

My e99 has no slingers
my 2000 has no slingers
another 2000 I had did have them
I just did seals on an 03 that had them as well
all are 10.5 axles
seems hit or miss, I do not think they are much of a needed item

it appears the manual is back and forth as to if they are used as well?

I have never really gone through the manuals before so I was uncertain lol

The manual has been wrong on several occasions, usually that is in the wiring diagrams with the circuit ID or color code though. I would not put it paste this section to be wrong again, but like Brandonpdx my mind was recalling an oil slinger from somewhere and I could not remember if that was from a video, the manual or my rebuild/maintenance sessions.

The new timken seal 370247a that i have looks like this
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...64af89a61f.jpg
Im going to assume that this seal fits more years than my 99 (with or without slinger)
The workshop manual is a bit confusing. How do i know if i have ford or dana axle

Walleye Hunter 03-15-2023 09:36 AM

The one in the back is a Ford, the one up front is a Dana until you get into the duallies with D80s (I think)..
