70 E300 steering questions.
Hello, I am new here and looking for information on my 1970 E300. The steering bell crank is washed out and needs to be worked. I need a starting point for parts. Do you have numbers?
|
You might find a number but I doubt you'll ever find a new part to buy
The bushing might still be available Make a 4x4 out of it with leaf springs and a rack or steering gear? Good luck |
What does “washed out” mean?
Sixto 07 E350 5.4 183K miles |

To put it lightly
You are screwed |
I am very tenacious, and I will figure it out, the van is in such good shape I cannot put her down. There is always a solution.

The factory door seals are still mint along with the door bottoms. All the flanges are still green. The doors close like factory. 41,000 original miles. glass is mint.

I agree
It is not worth junking it yet But, you are never going to find that bell crank new or rebuilt So it might be time for leaf springs and 4x4, the whole shootin match as far as steering goes It's too bad someone like Moog never made a aftermarket replacement part (there just aren't enough of those vans out there) |

Floor is mint, seats are like brand new Just a little rust to repair As a former body shop owner I see significant rust already formed along pinch weld and wheel well areas too. If that's not expertly addressed and repair it will advance quite quickly. |
For 52 years old, I consider it mint. The structure is awesome. I have been a body man for 40 years and I have fabricated all of the replacement rockers and lower 1/4s. I will post pics of the progress, and yes I have an 8' break, bead roller, English wheel. As far as the steering components, I will remove and work it on the bench/ machine shop to make it right. There seems to be a shortage of tec information on these steering systems. Not for long though, I will plow through it, as body men do when challenged.

Something to think about for your fng bell crank
Jaguar ball joints in the older XJs had shims in them and the ball itself was the size of a golf ball and came out You could remove a shim and make a loose ball joint tight again You, if you knew the big guy JC, you might be able to have a machinist cut your original one to where a jag setup can be modified to work in yours If you were to prefect that procedure you could sell about three thousand units maybe |

Starting point, now to find parts. Thanks very much |
so you need the 1969 and up with manual steering E300
Steering bell crank part number "C8UZ-3355-B"? I am sure there is a good one around the world somewhere, but where? I have tried a couple of sources I use such as rear counter, green sales, and NOS but with no luck so far. You may wind up needing a fabrication shop to help out. Keep us informed and let us know of any good links you come across for old parts. |
