ECU/PCM confusion

Can anyone tell me what the differences are between the two computers? What do the each control? The one in the firewall vs the one on the fender? Thanks

Sous 07-11-2019 01:45 PM

We do not have an ECU in our trucks. We have a PCM and an IDM. The PCM is in the cab by the firewall and the IDM is above the fender liner on the driver side front.

The PCM is the brain for the truck and controls or monitors most goings on in the truck. The IDM is the controller for the injectors.

That is a very basic explanation and I hope it helps.

One on the firewall by the ebrake is the PCM, Powertrain Control Module, controls all things engine and transmission

The one on the drivers side inner fender is the IDM, Injector Driver Module, powers only the injectors, commanded by the PCM

Edit: Sous types faster

Cool, thanks. I need to find an ECU at a decent price. Any ideas?

Wes444 07-11-2019 01:54 PM

Nope. As already mentioned above, we do not have an ECU on our trucks. So if u need an ECU then it's for a different vehicle than we can help you with in this particular subform. IDM or a PCM we can help you with

Sous 07-11-2019 01:55 PM

If you are speaking of an IDM, then see below. If you are looking for an ECU, please post up some details about the vehicle you are asking about...

RAE has been a good replacement IDM - 7.3L Ford Powerstroke Injector Driver Module

Hopped up IDM from RAE - https://www.remanautoelectronics.com...3L-IDM-HP.aspx

DTC is a good source for a hopped up IDM too - https://www.dieseltechchatt.com/pages/about-d-t-c

Swamps, RiffRaff, etc... all have IDM's, just choose your poison...

EDIT: Wesley was the fast one that time...

Sorry. I need a PCM.

rondogw if the '97 F250 4X2 extra cab in your signature and in your avatar picture is a diesel and is the vehicle you are asking about, post your question here:

Dangit...

Truth be told I am on my tablet and cannot see his signature and the avatar is tiny.

@rondogw I can move this thread to the appropriate sub-forum if you like?
