Ok, taking the cab off is cheating! :-X04.

twg1966 07-04-2019 06:49 PM

I need to get a lift so I can use it like that.

KubotaOrange76 07-04-2019 07:12 PM

I wouldnt call it cheating, just dont want to be bent over anymore Bought it used for $1800 out of a shop
its been amazing
took about 20 mins to pull turbo and another 20 for the up pipes including having to get creative creative with one of the bolts

timmyboy76 07-04-2019 10:52 PM

Haha..thats 1 way to go about it.:-X22
Besides the cab bolts, you gotta list from memory on what all needs removed/disconnected to go that route?

ZachinCO 07-05-2019 08:08 AM

I guess that's one way of doing it...:-missingt

Your shop is too clean and organized. By the looks of things, this isn’t your first rodeo getting cabs off. Great job and yes a detailed list of things to do for cab removal would be great. :-drink

HAHA Its cluttered right now. REady to get this done and move back to building the motor for my 79. Got some heads to finish porting and slap the 460 together.

Actually this is my first time raising cab on a newer vehicle. Took about 3 hours, i bet i could do it in two now.

I have done cab swaps on older trucks, but not near as involved.

I compiled this list to follow before hand from a few forums and put into a word doc.

Pretty much everything is correct, except some of the fittings for the trans cooler lines and i was able to leave the PS cooler on just disconnected the hoses.

I also removed the two brake lines that go into the abs controller, and unbolted the controller's three bolts and set it up and over onto the frame. It has braided flex hoses to enable this.

Surprisingly that was the only thing i missed when i started inching it up.

I also marked the floor at the tires, so i hope putting it back together tomorrow isnt too difficult.

Headed home from work now, time to pick up coolant, brake fluid, trans fluid, thermostat, and some misc shop supplies.

Wish me luck on the oil cooler seals, fuel bowl and hpop reseal today. Ill take pics.

Got started about 4
went ahead and changed tcase fluid
drained oil and put in my old ford tractor and bottled up the old antofreeze to use in my old trucks so that took a little time
finally got to yank the oil cooler
drained oil and drained coolant from block first
came apart cleaned and went back together pretty easy. Green orings broke coming off so Definitely glad i changed them
next came the fuel bowl, ran into snag cause mud dobber decided to make a nest in drain hose. Got the bowl pulled and on the bench.
about to grab a bite to eat then its time to do the hpop then get to resealing.
after that its on to cps, valve covers glowplugs then put it all back together with new up pipes and alternator.
Enjoy

Good Job taking advantage of the extra room for all that maintenance, removing the cab has to be nice.

What T case fluid? That's been a hot topic.

Recommend Riff Raff intake plenum inserts and set of IC boots plus clamps. Just in case you have more boost later.

If fuel bowl heater is original get the new updated version. Aside from the S&B it looks pretty stock. And consider disconnecting it entirely since you're in Jawja.

What up pipes did you choose? If Dorman suggest dry fit on bench since they can be sketchy. Certainly were sketchy for me!

Hutch and Harpoon mods are almost mandatory, especially when you can lift the bed.

Check power steering line where it passes the shock tower, can rub and leak. Suggest new since they can pop the seal at the PS pump too.

KubotaOrange76 07-06-2019 08:20 AM

I just went back with mercon 3 for tcase
not oaying that big $ for the new spec
will it explode?

This truck is staying stock. Actually going to put a stock intake back on it if someone wants the s&b
boots and everything still look and feel good plan to stick with what i have just cleaned them up good

deleting the fuel bowl heater.
also going to try and seal off the ebpv actuator . Ill probably regret it later. Anyone evert succesfully done this? It already had the banks elbow and plug for connector.

the up pipes arent china as tempting as it was i went with xdp i think it was?

anyone have a clean link to hutch and harpoon mods? I think the last time i read up in them was 2002 on ford-diesel.com lol

being on a budget sucks
having to fight back temptation to replace all the power steering lines and pump etc . If money were no object it wiuld be a turbo hpop etc etc

all the lines and orings are in great shape. I plan to run them till the pump goes out and then replace it all together.

thank you for the tips

Thinking about gutting actuator and tapping for a brass pipe plug?? Anyone ever done this?
