Can anyone identify this engine?

As some may know, I got an ‘86 F-150 and the seller said it had a 5.0 from a 1979 f-150 but he didn’t do the swap and didn’t know much about it SO I was seeing if any of you fine folk could tell from my bad photos. Yes the engine looks terrible but I’m trying to polish the turd

1977/79 F100/350: 6 valve cover bolts per side = 302 (F100/150 only) // 7 valve cover bolts per side: 460 (except F100) // 8 valve cover bolts per side: 351M/400

So it is a 302! Thank you. I just wanted to make sure I’ve been getting the right parts for it

Meridian_Mike 05-13-2019 08:39 AM

Sure looks like a 302....
Contrary to popular belief..... it's not impossible to polish a turd. Myth Busters did it and I am doing it right now on my 302.

Mike, could I ask you a few carburetor questions once I’m off work? I can’t send messages yet :(

LOL.... speaking of polishing turds.....
Here is one that can be polished..... This is a piece of coprolite..... a fossilized alligator turd.... Yes, a rock..... easily polished.....LOL.

SO... take heart..... it's not that hard to polish a turd!
So... get on with it.!!!

So here’s my questions!
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...793d424eb.jpeg
Is there suppose to be this gap? Also that plate where the throttle cable attaches becomes super stiff once the truck is turned on making the gas pedal stick really badly. (Makes it hard to shift)
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...5c04ceb9a.jpeg
What does this thing do!? It has a spring attached to it and a set screw but I can seem to figure out what the heck it is.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...cc512cbf9.jpeg
Fuel spits out of this... I assume it’s not suppose to do that?

Meridian_Mike 05-13-2019 04:35 PM

Yep.... there is supposed to be a gap. That is the dashpot.... a part that control the closing of the throttle.

From all the other issues I can say this.... You are in BAD NEED of a carb rebuild..... (Or a new or rebuilt carb.) Yours sure is FILTHY!!!

The part that spits fuel.... that is where the accelerator pump resides. and NOPE, sho nuff aint supposed to leak.

Meridian_Mike 05-13-2019 04:43 PM

Rebuild kits aren't very expensive.... Maybe about $25...

These are easy to rebuild..... Yours looks like a 2150 .... clean off a little of the grunge and see what you find under there.

Jack118711 05-13-2019 05:12 PM

Well a rebuild obviously couldn’t hurt. I did notice at the bottom of the accelerator pump there is a little hole and that’s where the fuel comes out. Is that hole suppose to be plugged?

Meridian_Mike 05-13-2019 05:17 PM

There is a diaphragm inside there and it is probably punctured....
Looks like....

I'm not so sure about the "wouldn't hurt" part.....
I think it is very necessary
