93 5.0 EGR tube question
 

(Edit for those with short attention span: It was Code 33 and the fix this time was an EGR Control Solenoid.)

OBDI throwing a code for EGR flow I think it was. EGR diaphragm holds vacuum and pintle moves freely. Vacuum hoses replaced. Haven't tested EGR solenoid yet.

When I had the EGR removed, the EGR tube that goes to the manifold seemed loose. Since I can't see the other end, I'm wondering if that's normal? Or indicative of breakage or coming unseated?

EGR flow error isn't possible for that year truck so what was the exact code you got?

The EGR tube has a flex joint in the middle it may feel loose when disconnected but as long as the loose end doesn't turn it's OK.

Code 33 both with engine on and off. Truck runs pretty good, maybe a slight stumble when I floored it in the second test.

Is there any vacuum on the EGR line at idle? Should not be. The code suggest the valve isn't opening when commanded or the position sensor isn't reporting correctly, so the problem is likely either the control solenoid, the vacuum line, or the position sensor.

No vacuum at idle on EGR line. Looks like I'll have to find my digital multimeter and play with some of that. After double checking the vacuum lines.

It was the EGR Control Solenoid. And likely a sticky pintle on the EGR valve.

I'd like to say it was my stellar diagnostics that won out, but due to time circumstances I went out and bought a position sensor and vacuum solenoid and installed the position sensor first...no luck. Installed the solenoid and poof, the check engine light stays off.

I did check the ability of the EGR diaphragm and the vacuum canister to hold vacuum...both did. And recall I did remove the EGR valve and found the pintle movement to be sticky and not fully moving, and fille dit with carb cleaner for a couple hours, drained and dried it, and sprayed it with some WD-40. Works smoothly now.

FYI, bought a Harbor Freight vacuum tester and brake bleeder on sale for $24. that helped.

For anyone who might troubleshoot similar EGR issues, maybe pull the vacuum line leading to the EGR...it looks like it runs around back of the engine and goes into the control solenoid. I'm thinking I could have plugged one end and used the vacuum tester on the other to test for holes in the line.

Is it possible it was code 332? I had that one related to EGR on a '95 w/ 302.

My 93 spits out three digit code DTCs

93 should be 3 digit code. Mine is. you may be reading a 332 as 33-1-1

Was for sure a 33. KOEO AND KOER.
