Is this supposed to be straight?
 

I just got Gracie (short for Grace) back on the road. 1964 F100 6 Cylinder 223 ...and I'd like to deal with a shifting issue I'm having.

Getting into first is a problem.
Getting out of reverse is a problem.
Getting into reverse not a problem

2nd and 3rd are ok.

It was pointed out to me that this spacer (?) supposed to be straight. ( See photo )
A friend said I'm probably having shifting is because the motor mounts need to be replaced.

Any photos of what you have would be appreciated too.

What is the nature of the problem?? Are you grinding gears??
In that case, the clutch may need adjustment.

Grinds gears, not all the time.
 

When I can get into 1st, it's fine.
When I can't get into first, it grinds gears.

Sometimes it get's stuck 8n reverse, no grinding.

Your picture has two green lines that look like you are outlining the Z-bar. The tube portion of the z-bar is not always straight. Sometimes they have a curve in them to clear the steering column, for example.

There are bushings on either end of the inside of the tube that can get worn out or crack and disintegrate, too. My 1966 probably slightly different so take with a grain of salt but these could be cause of some shifting troubles and might be worth at least a check.

I might see what you are getting at - the Z-bar is maybe drooping a little bit toward the engine side? Motor mounts being shot might let the engine sink down some to where the Z-bar is running a little low on the inside. Anything like that which affects the geometry of the clutch linkage could be a culprit for grinding gears. The transmission shift linkage, linkage bushings, steering column condition, transmission mount and cab mounts can be other factors.

I had the same problem with one of my 3spd trucks once and found out the cause was my cab mount had rusted out and was letting my cab sit too low causing too much pressure on my steering column. I replaced the cab mount and rubber bushings which raised my cab back to the factory specs. and it had no problems shifting after that.

I'd try tightening aka elongating the part that pushes on the clutch fork (7521 in the diagram).

I'm jealous of ur spare tire mount
 

She looks sweet!

The cut out rear fender to accept the spare tire was on my wish list for first time old truck. Gracie was just too good to pass by.

I was poking around under Gracie last night and looked at her motor mounts. Is this what a healthy motor mount looks like?

I'm no expert but those look alright to me.
