Need Smog but have glow plug codes.

I have a e99 7.3 and the time has come to get a smog(CA). Truck is back to stock but I have had glow plug codes and they have been on for some time. P1391&P1393. Plugs are motor craft and ohmed within all desired ranges as well as relay testing out good. Valve cover gaskets were replaced. Just need a idea where to start next.

Thanks.

If all the wiring is good between the gpcm and the plugs, then next place to look at would be the gpcm

Did you replace the harness that goes to the glow plugs? It's different from the valve cover harness.

Yes it was replaced. I double checked continuity and checked the 3 fusible links there aswell

It is either the relay or the shunt. The shunt is that metal strap on the right side of the relay. You have a CA model E99. There are not too many of those around. Since you have codes for both banks, my money is on the relay but a good multimeter will tell you for sure

Could be the GPR itself. Here's a link to Guzzle's write up with info on testing and the Stancor mod.

Be sure to complete the "drive cycle" after you clear the codes or it will fail again.

California is a big pain

When mine went out in Wyoming years back, they got rid of that shunt, metal strap, and installed it without. Has worked fine for years. I keep the old parts but never had to put them in.

Did you ever figure this out? I have the same truck, same codes and same issues with getting smog next month.

The new relay from auto zone didn’t last a week. I replaced it with another autozone one Cleared my codes and drove around with a hot truck long enough to have the computer run the misfire and cc monitors. It passed smog that day then the relay failed 2 days later. I ordered up a white Rodgers gpr and will be mounting that next.

As far as I know, 99.5 is the cutoff for smog tests. I didn’t think you had the smog an E99. Did something change?

I have to smog mine. It was built 9/98. The model year is 1999 so you have to smog it.

It's all based on OBDII compliance. CA doesn't smog '98 and earlier diesels because of this. Dodge, Chevy, and Ford all started a new "generation" of their HD truck lines in '99 and they were OBDII compliant. I'm not sure about the others but the Superduty was only partially compliant (which is why you have to get a specific "bundle" to fully communicate with our trucks) but have enough general code capabilities to still be enough for the state to ensure you're compliant-ish }>. That is why your '99 will always be tested (even the E99).

The down side is that our trucks will always be tested but the silver lining is that they can only read the things that actually set the SES light. Soft codes like the AIH and EBPV don't set off the SES and you won't be hit by those on a smog test.

I did the "Stancor" relay and have been trouble free so far. My Alliant relay failed after like 2 weeks.

The Stancor is no longer made by Stancor, it seems. I forget the brand but ordered mine from a trusted source and it came with different labelling.
