Truck dies after couple min of driving

hey guys just had this happen for the second time this morning. About two minutes from house the truck dies. Happened the other day too. Takes about a minute for it to try and start back up and once it fires it runs rough then goes back to normal. Any ideas.

Do you have anyway of monitoring engine data? Have you replaced the CPS? Checked the ICP plug for oil?

Are you saying that after it "restarts" it is good to go the rest of the day/trip?

Tugly 11-12-2017 06:21 AM

Check if the IPR nut is in place, and I'd replace the CPS because it's such an easy/inexpensive precaution.

When it restarts i just drive it back home and it seems to run fine. Sucks the truck just hit 100 thousand miles now I’m having an issue. Leaving for camping next week for thanksgiving. As long as I figure it out

I just replaced the fuel filter and the cps. Seemed great. Drove it a few times no issues. Tried to drive it today and it died again within the first couple min of driving. Took a min to restart but did and idles really rough. Put it in drive gave gas and went back to normal.

So still having the same issue. I pulled my programmer thinking maybe it was the problem. After connecting batteries it drove fine for a few miles. Gave it a shot today and it died at the same spot it always does about 15 houses from mine. But it was different this time. Instead of motor shutting off I just lost accceleration. Coasted to curb and it ran rough for a second then idled itself back to normal. I have changed the cps sensor and the fuel filter.

Standard question: CPS Ford or IH? If not need to get either one but NO aftermarket electrical parts of any kind.

Ford parts. Got directly from dealer

Did you drive through any water when it died? Moisture can get in the Cam Position Sensor around the o-ring and kill it. Usually 'starts right back up'.

How did it die? Fast, like key shut off or slower like starved for fuel?

Low oil level will close the injectors, as they stay open by oil pressure.

Unplug the fuel bowl heater connector on the back of the fuel bowl, it is not needed and if the element burns out, it is hard to trace down and will blow fuse #30.

We haven’t had any rain here in so cal for a while. It dies out slow almost like its out of fuel. At the same spot every time.

My brother brought his code scanner from work today. Was able to pull 3 codes out that aren’t triggering the check engine light but we’re in the system. P0541 intake air heater a circuit low. P0476 exhaust pressure control valve perform. And p0380 glow plug circuit fault.

As tugly suggested, check the IPR nut.

I just checked the nut it’s right.

Just a shot in the dark here. Is there a radio or TV station/transmitter near where your truck dies? There were a few folks a while back with similar issues that had flaky ground connections that would not shield the electronics from outside RF interference.
