1951 F1 tranny project
 

On my 1951 F1 V8, I am in the final stages of swapping a worn out HD four speed for a LD 3 speed remote shift (on the column). Upon installing the steering linkage, column, etc, the gear shift is seized up, in other words, it doesn't move. Any suggestions? BB

Disconnect the shift rods at the trans levers, and see if the trans levers can be moved (one at a time). If that works, then the problem is in the column.

Did you change the clutch from an 11" to a 10"?

Problem is definitely in the column. Thinking about just looking for a new one with the shifting linkage. Any suggestions on where I can get one?

The column shifters are very simple. I'd bet on the selector pin being out of position. How-to article attached.

Got the right column shifter freed up using your instruction. Lot of rust a corrosion at the seam. The left one (circled on the photo) is being stubborn, and my question to you is: is there actually a steam or separation there like on the right one? Following me?

Yes, it needs to slide off the end of the shaft. Then slide the center section off the end (it may come off with the piece on the left), and push out the pin. Then the upper (right) lever can slide off.

Zeroing in on finishing my tranny project, but in need of a better diagram of the horn assembly. The one in the shop manual is poor and the detail is tiny! Any suggestions?

This should help. The black plastic piece is not stock, it's something I made up to get by until I ordered a new wire assembly.

My new horn wire from Bob Drake didn't have that piece - nor anything crimped on at the top, just the bare wire. I didn't have any luck getting it resolved with them, so put the old stuff back in. Ross, what's the purpose of the gray foam down inside, next to the steering wheel hub? Thanks! - Bob

That's all you get, a plain 'ol horn wire...whether you buy a repop or a NOS genuine Ford horn wire.

As you can see in the pic, the other parts were furnished individually.

Bob, I got the correct wire from DC, as I recall. I still have the one pictured, which I cut some off the bottom, and is missing the fiber washer (still has the plastic piece). The insulation is oily but not cracking. If you want it I can throw it in the mail.

I don't think I put the foam in there, I assume it's to keep noise down? or electrical insulation? It was >10 yrs ago, CRS....

Bill, the wire is supposed to come with a brass piece crimped on the top end and a bullet on the bottom.

I bought that horn wire in '91 and the package is still unopened. Got it because I thought I remembered the horn wire was frayed the first time I replaced the steering gear, in the 1970's. When I changed the steering gear the second time in 2013, I was going to replace the wire but found the new one had just the one terminal. You can see it in the picture above. Turned out my original wire was still fairly good, so put a piece of heat shrink tubing on it. Thanks for the offer Ross, but "I'm good" with this one. Mine doesn't have that foam piece - I don't think it's original. You should just be looking at the metal hub (with the puller holes) after you take off the nut, and the cup with the spring. My steering wheel is cracked in about the same places as yours! Electrical tape and a "lace on cover" is better than spending $200, at least for a work truck.
