1995 Aerostar GTRV westy camper
I bought the neighbour's '95 awd Aerostar GTRV camper van.
Outfitted originally by Lulu Island campers in Richmond BC Canada, before they were bought by gtrv. No chassis rust, but left rocker crushed by ford dealer hoisting it, and not fixed well by them. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...8b41e5135b.jpg |
can you drive it with the top up?
|
You can, but I wouldn't recommend it :)
|
Lucky guy.I've been wanting to do this with mine. The forum has hammered by me with vs conversion stuff. The van is close to vs size. But the vw is about 1 1/2 foot longer. I had swing away tire carriers and other goodies I wanted to install. The ranger guys have a lot of info for the transfer case swap.the front diff is carp. It will come apart. You can install a real Dana 28th in it. We ha e a hybrid junker.keep in touch

I had a '78 vw camper years ago, and have been looking at vanagon westys, but they've gone stupid in price. I've never seen an Aerostar camper before; maybe just wasn't paying attention. This GTRV conversion is nice, and I'm looking forward to making it a bit of a 4x4, but a mild one; probably 215/75x14 tires, max.

COOL have fun with that. Drive that with pride!

I know I lucked-out finding this. I forgot to take a pic of the top bed. I'd like to know more about that swing-away tire mount.
|
Interesting how that narrow bench seat is "phased". The normal one would be mounted against the driver's side, but this one is against the passenger side. It must be a custom made configuration just for this type of construction.

A couple pics of the top bed, but not very good ones, unfortunately.

That van is pretty cool. I've got a 97 Aerostar with the pop top. I love it. 210,000 on the original engine.
|
Any pics? I'd like to see your set up.

1. You must remove 6 screws on each side of the front fender well in inner shield is attached to the outside at the rim lip. 2 I took blue painters tape 1-1/2 wide and covered the cut ares in an arch so I don't mess up the paint and my line is easer to see. 3. I used a sharpie and a a dummy guide first I started with a combo square but being 12 inches long it was a bother so I had an old L bracket from a old wood project it was 1 1-1/2 inches long the fender line on the eyebrow is just over 1" high. 4. I put the bracket on the fender lip the sharpie on the other end and traces a arch the shape of the fender on the paper 1 inch high all the way around. 5. Used a 4" cut off disc and it took 2 minutes each fender wear glasses you deffenly need them for sparks and junk inside the lip that's hiding. Now that both were cut I had many options,my van was ruffer than yours my looked more jeep like not pretty like yours so I went to pep boys they sell fender well molding black chrome peal and stick its about $50 or more bucks and flairs were $100. So since I'm jeepish looking I went to Home Depot for $6.00 I bought a 10 ft length of pvc type of pipe I could have used alumin or metal. The pipe comes center line marked fron the factory. Clamped it in my vice and cut a slit the whole length. If I really wanted a rubber look I could have use pipe insluntation it's pre cut. The wheel lip came out to be 42" I cut the pipe and heated it with a hot air gun just to soften it a little and pushed it on the cut lip. Magic it's done. I removed it painted it black and pit it back on. Used some fender trim glue and it worked great. After looking at it I had to do the rear with the rear left stock the LAN looked like it was lower in the front from the look of bigger front lower rear. Repeated same thing. I didn't get photos of that project after that I sold my van because I'm moving from Vegas to jersey and did not want to ship van. After 2 1/2 years of tinkering I learn a lot. I'm going to look for a unit like yours or do a full size Ford van. |
