CK vs CJ oil

It is time again for the yearly service on the green demon, and I have seen various threads about the new oils for diesels. I read through some and came away more confused than anything. What is the consensus on what type of oil to use in our trucks? I used to just always grab Valvoline 15/40 diesel oil, however Im now paranoid with the formula changes required by EPA that this oil isn't to spec anymore.

So I ask you all, what oil is currently considered acceptable for our engines?

I bought enough Rotella T6 a couple months ago for 2 more oil changes. So, I am good for the next year or so until this all gets sorted out for sure.

I run Motor Craft oil. The new containers have WSS-M2C171-F1 on the label.

Since you never seem to find the appropriate links in the beginning of the threads, here's the latest list I've seen. The Valvoline heavy duty 15w-40 makes the list as approved, but I don't see premium blue on there. Around here, Wally World carries the Valvoline heavy duty.

You could also run John Deere Plus 50 engine oil. Has shown great results on BITOG website.

it's made from Chevron base stock, very similar to Delo400, just a different label.

i think it's on the list:

5W-40 section, labeled as Premium Blue Extreme.

why the don't have it listed as Valvoline is beyond me.

So is the standard shell rotella 15/40 still good ? I need an oil change also and that's all ive been running for years

I've been running the Rotella T5 Synthetic Blend. I've noticed that my injectors idle quieter, so i will continue run it.

I get it at Wally World.

I've run out of my Mobil Delvac CJ and all I can find on the shelves now is CK. F350-6 attached the latest sheet. For the latest from Ford you can go here:

https://www.fcsdchemicalsandlubrican...ry=Motor%20Oil

Once I get my truck running it will need an oil change (new cups and sticks) so I'll either have to change brands or hope for the best.

Also my understanding is that they could legally fill a bucket with a label CJ with CK oil as it meets or exceeds the specifications of the product label. We do things similar to this all the time as a running change. Use up the old packaging with the new product rather than throw it away.

I have both Mobil Delvac CJ and CK labeled 5 gallon pails at home. It is possible that the oil in the CJ bucket only meets CJ and not CK? sure. Is it also possible that the oil in the CJ bucket meets the CK and CJ specification? sure.

Without knowing when they stopped producing the CJ oil and a date code on the bucket you cannot know with absolute certainty that the oil does NOT meet CK specification. All you know is that it meets or exceeds the CJ as labeled.

But he asked about dino oil, not synthetic. The premium blue (that I used to run) in dino isn't on the list. Only the synthetic.

It turned out OK though as the Heavy Duty dino is on the list, and it's cheaper.

Oops.....my bad. I missed that part :)

Delo 400 CK-4 didn't make the list? Is it made in North Korea or something?

Many of the old standby's didn't make the list, but some of the cheap stuff like Travellers from Tractor Supply or Supertech from Wally world did.

I don't know if it has to do with who submitted samples for testing, or maybe when they submitted them and the testing isn't done yet. I do know that Motorcraft 15w-40 didn't make the approved list the first time around, but has been added to the latest version.

Perhaps the others will be added later. Or perhaps we've all fallen for the brand name thing and been overpaying for our oil.

Edit from the 6.7 forum: Apparenlty Ford isn't the only one finding issues with CK-4

Whitey Ford 07-19-2017 08:18 PM

Thank you Chris. I heard Motorcraft is coming out with a new oil by years end. Hope this all has a happy ending. What do you use now?
