Trans problem on first drive
Finally get my truck back together after 2 years of not driving it. It was all apart for final paint and a rebuild AOD (So I was Told when I bought it). First drive the trans would shift into overdrive and then the engine would just rev. Great!:-huh
Took trans back out and opened it up. Everything is new put as you can see the OD band it smoked. I bet who ever had this trans last never adjusted the TV cable right. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...eea738bce4.jpg I have another trans so I opened it up to get the rev drum and its a little different . I think its an updated drum. Anyone no for sure? https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...c623bdee00.jpg |
Do you know what year the AOD is? Around the late 80's they were making the OD servos heavier duty for cabs, police, Mustangs, etc. By the early 90's they were a lot stronger. But you are correct, the TV cable was the weak link, only takes a few miles with it wrong to fry them.

It was out of an 90 Crown Vic. Been doing some reading and there is a servo update. My servo has a B on it. The stronger one says an A.

I believe the 90 should have most of the better parts ,there are numerous parts from an aode that are better yet and can be swapped in .

Hi Reg,
Sorry to hear about your AOD problems.. I would recommend Baumann Engineering. They have a great site with everything you would ever want to know on AOD & AODE transmissions. We upgraded our 351W & needed to beef up our AOD to handle the HP. Baumann Electronic Controls Company History We went with a Kevlar Overdrive Band from Baumann as it's common for the stock one to slip off under acceleration. We also used their upgraded Overdrive Servo. They come in (3) flavors - you want to use the strongest 2 inch Servo. The Base AOD comes with a weak 1.5 in. servo. Setting the TV Cable is very hard to get right ...and very small adjustments can give you large pressure changes. Don't feel alone - We broke (2) AOD's before finding an old guy AOD expert at a Trans shop. Good luck over there. Ben in Austin 1950 F1 (351W/AOD) |

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...ba50ef5ce4.jpg Pardon the mess. Still working on the wiring to other parts of the vehicle. |
And one reason I went with the 700R4. Simple TV adjustment and bulletproof. }>
