New-to-me 2001 F-250 7.3

Found a 2001 Ford F-250 Super Duty Crew Cab, 4x4, Lariat, 7.3L with 105k miles on Autotrader in Mississippi for $12,958. Called them up and they had just traded it from an elderly couple who used it to tow their fifth wheel. One owner, clean Carfax (attached), regular maintenance ALL documented on the Carfax. He was trading it because he wanted the 6.7. I thought it sounded too good to be true so I had the salesman send videos of it running, asked him to send one of setting the oil cap on the oil filler tube to check for blow-by, etc. Everything seemed to check out. Only thing I could think of at this point was a bad tranny. So I asked him how it shifted. Of course he said fine, so I took his word. I was still hesitant, but figured what could I lose; a 7.3 with 105k miles for 12k? So I put $500 down and told him I'd be there in two days. Got on Southwest and bought a "wanna get away" ticket to fly down Friday (this was Wednesday) and take a look. Got to the dealership, asked him to start it up while I checked for blue smoke...no blue smoke. Listened for knocks...no knocks...verified speedometer worked (thought maybe that's why it had such low miles?) but it worked...took it for a test drive, shifted fine, looked for leaks, no leaks. Pretty much flawless for a 2001. Could not find anything wrong with it. Went inside and sat down with the finance lady. Half an hour later I walked out with the keys and drove it 700 miles home to North Carolina, ran perfectly the whole way.

Score!! :-drink

Great score. Decent 7.3L trucks are getting hard to find.

Has the Trans and Diff fluids been changed?? Looks like a nice truck, congrats

Thanks, I was pretty happy with my find.

Diff fluid yeah, says in the Carfax, not sure about the trans fluid but it was bright red so possibly? From the Carfax it appears this guy was super anal about maintenance, so I'd hope so.

I honestly hope that the dealer threw in $5k or so in services!! Yikes $12k seems a tad high granted it's in superb condition, so I'm hoping that's part of it, but you may want to check all fluids to make sure they were changed, if it's an E 99 (fender badge) it will use the regular green coolant with SCT additives (i think that what it's called) if it is a L99 (I think that is when the switch was done, please correct me if wrong) it will use an OAT and IIRC Motorcraft gold.

also nice find hope it can make breakfast and bring it to you in bed too :)

You're kidding right? Try and find a 99 - 03, 7.3, Lariat, CrewCab, 4 wheel Drive around 100k miles for under $13k...cheapest I was seeing them go for was 14 - 17k, and a lot of them had more miles and were XLTs. Maybe I'm missing something, but I thought $12.9 was a steal.

According to AutoTrader:
Price Range of Results: Highest: $25,000 | Lowest: $13,975 | Average: $20,311

its an 01, not e99.

Some would turn over in their graves knowing what I paid for mine and I thought it was on the low end of what I was seeing out there for the condition and mileage I was being picky about. Going rate is also dependent on location, but glad you were able to cash in on the deal. I can only imagine how nerve-wrecking the flight over was for you.

Haha yeah, from the time I purchased the flight until I arrived, in my head I was going over everything I was going to check that could possibly be wrong...I just knew something had to be wrong with it. But, so far so good. Only thing I can think of is maybe the paint? It's slightly faded, and even though it doesn't bother me, maybe that's a deal breaker for others and that's why it was priced so well...? I still can't figure out why it was so cheap.

Nice truck, you stole it!

River Wild 05-16-2017 10:14 AM

Yeah you got a heck of deal on that rig. Out here on the wet coast that's an $18-19K rig all day. I've got a 2000 7.3 DRW CC that I'm about to sell and I'm told to start at $20K since it's in greeat shape, set up to tow and haul a slide in camper, and all maintenance has been done.

CousinCarl 05-16-2017 10:26 AM

Just noticed there's no exhaust exit. Was it cut off before the muffler? How'd it sound those 700 miles home?

Njstern87 05-16-2017 10:39 AM

Thats a great deal! I paid 13200 for mine with 121k, e99 extra cab long bed with the lariet trim. Good find.. :-jammin

I took the the muffler off...it was bone stock when I got it. Sounds amazing. Since 2001s don't have cats, it's now straight piped without the muffler.

Definitely a good price on it. I still see a lot of obs 7.3's with twice the miles as yours going for 10-12k around here.
