64 econoline van 4sp
 

have 3sp man trans in my 64 econoline would like to put 4 sp in it ! i know that ford had the 4 sp opp for a few years ,is there any other 4sp that can be retro fitted to fit a early econoline ?

The major issue would be linkage. There was a Dagenham 4 speed in the early Econolines:

Pretty rare, and what do you have when you do get one?

As for other 4 speeds, you would be having to fabricate shift linkage or adapt Dagenham linkage if you could find it.

What engine do you have?

I saw one of these on an E250 when I was in high school in the 70s - it was 4 on the tree. Never seen one before or since.

The 4-speed transmission was available on the Econoline in 1963 and 1964.

Most of the discussion I have seen is that owners did not like the gear ratios in the 4-speed and replaced it with a 3-speed.

Not sure how that would have been possible. 4 on the tree or even 4 on the floor were never offered in an E250.

yes they were.
as said above, the four speed was an option in 1963, and 1964.
the one i ran had issues with the linkage and would bind up in two gears.
we ended up pulling the trans out, stripping the linkage off the column, and putting an automatic in with cable shifter.

Well my memory ain't what it used to be, but my recollection was this was a Falcon Econoline type van of early 60s vintage. It was a van for a plumbing business and I thought it said "Heavy Duty" on the side. That may not have been called E250 at that time, but it looked like a bigger, heavier van, with long wheelbase and larger wheels and tires, like an F250 would have vs. an F100. Was such a thing available from Ford in '63-'64?

yup. the one we had was a public service electric and gas 64 heavy duty with doors on both sides. it was their painters van.
had a 170 with 4 speed on the column. bought 5 of them in 74 for $200. sold the 4 good ones after painting them one color, and kept the painters van.
we ran it around for the summer, then took it to california in spring of 75. sold it there with the automatic trans in it for a grand and flew home.

I do not doubt you could have a 4 gear in a HD version in '63-4. But they were not designated as "E250s" as post 3 indicates.

Econoline Model and Body Style

i missed that part. if i remember correctly the E-250 designation did not even start until the second generation body style came out in 1968

I'm thinking the 3rd gen starting in '75. I think the '68-'74s used "E200" and "E300". Why, here's one now:

There were no "bigger" Econolines from 1961-1967. The longer Econoline was called a Super Van, and was 18" longer at the back end. The wheelbase for all 1961-1967 Econolines was 90". No long-wheelbase option.

The vans with 1-ton GVW rating had thicker frames and an extra leaf spring, so you could say they were heavier.

I have a 1964 Heavy Duty Econoline rated at 1 ton that came with 13" tires. Ford used more plys on the tires rather than larger size to get the higher load capacity.

All of the 1961-1967 Econolines and Falcon buses were E100 models, but Ford further confused the situation by using a similar designation, also called model, to designate the body style, window configuration, GVW, etc . See here Econoline Model and Body Style

4 on the tree not limited to Citroen ID19/DS21 & Mercedes-Benz 219/220 .. as you can see.

I helped a friend put a four speed Mustang transmission in an Econoline back around 1970. We used the three speed shifter to control the four forward gears and made a separate lever on the engine compartment for the reverse gear.

Backing in and out was a busy affair. :)

No such thing as an E250 prior to 1975.
