My 1967 F100 build
 

I picked up my '67 F100 in the Summer of 2013. A fellow FTE'er and close friend Flip4Ford had previously donated a 429 big block for help my brother and I gave him getting his '63 back on the road. Another FTE'er and good friend smokenchoken posted up in the Kansas chapter that he knew of an old F100 that was on it's way to the scrapper if somebody didn't come buy it. I got to thinking this would be a good candidate for the 429 and C6 that was just taking up space in storage.

It would've been a shame for this one to go to the scrapper.

I ended up bringing it home for $400.00 with no motor, but otherwise a complete truck. It's straight except for a pretty nasty dent in the driver's door. It doesn't show well in the pic and it doesn't seem to effect how the door closes or window operation. I think it gives the truck character and plan to leave it. I also picked up a straight replacement '67 door if I change my mind. The driver's side floor pan is toast and the interior pretty much needs to be completely redone.

It cleaned up pretty nice for just hitting a coin op car wash.

I lucked out and scored a complete dent side chassis with a 460 on Craigslist for $100.00. I robbed all the power steering and front suspension components off it and sent it to the scrapper and got almost all my money back.

It's basically sat since then. My brother and I have finally started tackling a power disc brake swap. We pulled the old front suspension and brakes out.

Today I spent some time with an angle grinder with a wire wheel cleaning all the dirt and grime off the engine cross member. It was fairly clean considering it's age. there was more dirt and mud dobbers than grease and oil. My brother and I swapped out the original 300-6 frame perches for the big block perches and swapped out the old crusty steering gear box for a power steering box.

This is just temporary as I want to make sure everything fits together before we tear the front clip off. I'll go back and finish cleaning and painting the frame and cross members once it's all exposed.


Now that I've started working on it, I've found some problem areas that need attention. It turns out it's not gonna be as cheap of a build as I originally thought, but oh well it's just money. It needs new inner fenders, cab mounts and a radiator core support. I bought new inner fenders and cab mounts at our local swap meet. I just need to order a core support and will probably end up getting the dent side version for the bigger opening since I'll have the big block. Once it's back on the ground and rolling it'll go to a buddy's body shop to have these parts installed.

I want to thank everyone that has posted their builds and provided answers to my questions. I'm sure I will have several more as the build progresses. I'll update the thread as I go. This is my first Ford truck and I am looking forward to getting it back on the road.

I look forward to seeing the progress. I have '67 F100 as well and hope to get it back on the road soon as cheaply as I can (just needs brakes) and then do all the work to it that I have planned, as I have time and money.

That truck is in way too good of shape to go to a scrapper. You got a smokin' deal for $400 bucks.

Power brakes, front discs and power steering are the best things I've added to my '69 F100 short bed Ranger. Now, if I just had A/C in it..... that will come, eventually.

I agree. It was waaaay too nice to be scrapped. The previous owner just needed it gone in a hurry due to some personal issues. I originally planned to just drop in the motor and trans and fix the brakes to get it back on the road. Then the bumpside forum got ahold of me. After reading through all these build threads I just couldn't half ass it. I've spent 2.5 years collecting parts and saving money. It's still going to be a long road ahead, but I plan to take my time and do it right.

I did the same thing with my disc brake I-beam front suspention, power steering parts, tilt column, etc. I got the donor parts and then one-by-one started cleaning them up, ordered the parts to rebuild one assembly, stuck it to the side and covered it up and then moved onto rebuilding the next item and so on.

Once everything was cleaned up and rebuilt, it was time to start tearing old parts off the truck and put the newly rebuilt parts on.

Initially, I had about 5 things I was going to change on my truck and I figured it would take maybe 2 or 3 months to swap everything over. After I started taking parts off, I thought, "while I'm doing this, that needs to be changed/fixed/modified." Before it was over, the truck was down for nearly 6 months and instead of just changing 5 things I ended up changing about 14 things in all --some minor changes, some major changes.

It's easy for things to 'get out of hand' once you start fixing things on the old truck.

Well I'm going to enjoy this Bump "movie". 429 and all. Always thought that was a Cool number. Right behind 427. Gotta go nuke some popcorn.:-X22

That is a good "save", from the metal scrapper. You're on the right track about how to start your rebuild! I'll watch it grow from here.

Don't expect the back tires to last very long.....

The rear end needs a Traction-Lok differential so both rear tires will wear evenly. :-X03

Yep. It'll be getting a trac lok for sure. I need to do some gear ratio calculations before I settle on a ring and pinion. Thinking somewhere between a 3.0 and 3.50 with 31" tires.




We got the front beams and new bushings installed today. Will torque everything down and install the new rotors and calipers this week. Hope to have it back on the ground and rolling soon.

I'm looking forward to it. Not only is this my first Ford truck, it's my first big block too.

3.00:1 rear end gears will be nice cruising out on the highway but for all other times --particularly if you're going to pull a loaded trailer, they are going to be a dog.

3.50 or 3.70 rear end gears will put the engine higher in the RPMs out on the highway but the truck will have better acceleration and much better ability to pull a heavy load without bogging down the engine.

If you had an overdrive transmission, you could have the better gearing of 3.50 or 3.70 for accelaration/pulling but, you would also have the advantage of lower highway RPMs when in overdrive.

Front end is back under it. Has new rotors, calipers, shocks and big block springs. Hit the beams and section of frame with a wire wheel to clean them up and added a coat of paint. When the fenders come off, I plan to wire wheel the whole front frame section and coat it with POR15. A whole lot of black under the front.

Next is to run the brake lines and bring her home. So far we've been working on it in a storage shed we've been renting for the past few years. We finally had a garage built that takes up most all of the back yard. It'll be finished by the end of the week so we'll finally be able to work on it at home instead of driving across town.

And a question for the Ford pickup gurus here. Back in the day, was it common to mark the underside of the hoods on these old trucks? At first I thought maybe it was a replacement hood from a salvage yard, but the date being 3/24/67 is what seems odd if that's the case.
