The truck I'm working on is a 1958 international A-160 awd it was originally a airport plow truck here in Minnesota I'm repowering it with a 1985 6.9l and 4 SPD standard transmission I will be using 395/85/20 on the mrap wheels

Yeah, still going to single it out with the combat wheels and military 11.00 tires.

Should be a fun project for you. Old Internationals are cool trucks. Strictly work horses the are. I have a 1952 R-190 wrecker.

Also on your 395/85/20 tire choice... you will love them. For a big tire, they ride like a dream. I run the same Michelin XZL radial tire on my M35a2 military truck, but in the bigger (53") 16.00×20 size

Big-allis 05-14-2016 03:27 PM

I'm glad to hear that the tires will ride nice

Long post....sorry.

I went to start the truck today, and I got a no-start. It would crank over fine, but acted like it wasn't getting any fuel. Took the air cleaner off and looked down the carburetor, operated the throttle linkage and no squirt of fuel and the throttle plates didnt open either, even though I was running the throttle linkage through full cycle. The arm/ball that the linkage attaches to operates, but doesn't turn the throttle shaft. How it ever worked before, I don't know, but it doesn't work any longer. Now looking the system over, I relize the entire throttle linkage is all screwy. Someone (previous owner) cut off the gas peddle linkage arm from the right side, and welded it to the left side, and also modified the throttle linkage, and adapted it to the leftside of the carburetor. I can operate the throttle on the right side by hand (which nothing is attached to), and everything works like it should (accelerater pump & throttle plates open) Flatheads and 48-52 trucks are new to me so I never knew anything was askew.

The Flathead has been swapped out at one point to an earlier 59AB engine, but that wouldn't warrant the rigged up linkage like they did.

Why do you think they would have went through all that trouble to switch the linkage over to the left side (hand throttle cable side), from the factory right side hookup?

Maybe your truck was born a six cylinder and the folks who did the engine swap didn't want to go find all the correct V8 parts?

Dirtbag 05-22-2016 12:06 PM

Pretty sure it was a v8 truck from the factory. Anyone able to do a complete breakdown in the vin plate?

You are correct, the R designates a 239 flathead V8. Hmm, looks like a previous owner was doing something strange with carburetors and now you get to fix it. Hopefully one of the member has some spare parts to help you.

That was an odd setup

Dirtbag 05-25-2016 09:08 PM

I stopped out at Rod Kruithoff's place, and he had the appropriate linkage that I needed, and I picked up a few other things while there for the truck.

Why they hacked the throttle arm and linkage, and mounted it to the opposite side of the carburetor, will probably always remain a mistery....(they also welded three nuts together, to make a long "super nut" to hold the throttle arm to the firewall)

Glad you sorted it out, and that Rod had your pieces. How is Rod doing these days? It's been a few years since I've been up there, and he's not traveling to Iola and the other swap meets anymore. Stu

Rod and his wife are both doing pretty well. He's no spring chicken anymore, and getting up there in age, but gets around and is out in his shop everyday. He doesn't travel to the distance shows and swap meets anymore, but I still see him at the antique tractor shows that are on our side of the state.*

Last fall, (when I bought my truck) I was up to his place getting some parts I needed, and noticed my favorite truck of the bunch was missing from the line up. He said he had just sold his yellow 52 MH, to a guy here in town.*

Now when I stopped in to see if he had throttle linkage, some more trucks were gone. The same guy came back just last week and bought the seafoam green MH and the F8 BigJob tractor with its matching (absolutely beautiful) loboy trailer. He's thinning the herd some at this point.*

Kind of saddened me to see them go, as I loved going to his junkyard over the last 25+ years, (always got good deals and he's a great guy to talk with) and watching some of these Marmon-Herrington trucks come togather. There was always a truck or two in different stages of restorations. Thats where I first learned of the MH trucks.

Glad to hear he is doing well. I knew the yellow F-2 had gone to a new home but wasn't aware the green F-3 and the F-8 had gone too. As I heard it Rod's daughter is helping him sell the collection. Stu

Before your post about the trucks, I thought you were talking about Rod of Hot Rod's Ford truck parts of Ohio, saying he doesn't go to too many shows anymore. Now I see you are talking about another Rod, probably from Illinois.

Zeeland, Michigan. Stu

I hate to see such a beautiful collection being sold off. On the other hand, Rod is insuring the future of these beauties by finding good homes while he can control what homes they go to.

Those are gorgeous trucks. Wow he did a good job
