Ford 226 Oil Pressure on a Rebuild

Hello,

So I finally got around to starting up my recently rebuilt ford 226. Upon starting it up I noticed that the oil pressure went up to 80 pounds at idle. But on giving her a little gas oil pressure went beyond the gauge readings, looks like its well beyond 100 psi. Oil pressure remains beyond 100. I am using a mechanical gauge and today hooked up a second one to confirm the readings from the first, it does the same thing.

What could be causing this?? I have only ran the motor 2 times and around 5 min each time.

:-huh:-huh:-huh

I'd guess your oil pressure relief valve is stuck shut. Lots of details on it in this old thread:

what weight oil are you using?

Thanks for the tip Ross.

I will check which break in oil I am running tonight.

Thanks

I am running 15 w-50 break in oil by Joe Gibbs.

Before trying to remove the pressure relief valve I went out back to practice on my old block.

I broke 2 screw drivers.

What is the best way to remove this valve?? Looks like I may need a super size screw driver? I only fear that I may chew up the slotted end before I comes out.

Any ideas???

I was also thinking may be before removing it I try and add some wd40 into the plug right above to try and loosen it up. What do you guys think?

WD-40 isn't a good penetrant; for an oil system component all gummed up, I'd try straight acetone or lacquer thinner. They make "screwdriver bits" for 3/8" ratchets/breaker bars, likely what you'll need. The hot wrench may help too.

to remove that valve I used a big 3/8 flathead screwdriver, the biggest one they sell at Lowes in conjunction with a little heat from a mapp torch. The same does not work on the galley plugs so I have a 1/2 flathead socket coming for the impact gun.

Thanks for your help!

So as you can see from the picture, the valve stem is jammed and will not move in the relief valve that I just removed from the rebuild block.

I removed the other relief valve from the 226 block i have on the side of my house.

Thanks Everyone for the tip, looks like the relief valve is stuck closed.

I will try to loosen it up and clean it, or just use the one from my other block.

PSI now at 50, I only ran it for 1 minute to see if it would go to 100.

Thanks God it Did Not!

Vegas,

What RPM did you observe the 50?
And did you note any other readings after the fix at any other RPM's?

Reason for asking, I'm wondering what I could expect to see on my 226 if it were rebuilt.

thanks for any info,
Tom

Hi Buddy,

I am sorry I cannot give much more details since I only ran the engine for about 1 minute. It reached approx 50 pounds at cold start. I do not have an RPM gauge set up, sorry.

I will update this post as I go and let you know how the oil pressure thing goes.
