help identifying transmission

hey gents, just got a 86 f150 and well i was wondering how i can identify what auto transmission is on her. i think its a c4 but i have no idea. thanks for any suggestions

what engine? if it is a 302, it is most likely a C-4. if it is a 300 six, or a 351, it is probably a C-6

No 302/C4 after 1980.

1986 F150 4.9L (300 I-6) & 5.0L (302) could have either the C6 or the AOD

C6 shift dial is P R N D 2 1, has 17 trans pan bolt holes.

The AOD has an 0 in the shift dial and has 14 trans pan bolt holes.

1986 F150 5.8L (351W): C6.

mine is a 351w HO

Best way is to look at the pan shape and count the bolts.

If the 351 is original then it's no doubt a C6.

yup its a c6. also ive noticed when i go from any gear to reverse there is a sudden jerk. ive checked u joints and drive shaft for play and nothing. all other gears are fine. i dont know jack about auto transmissions so any advice is appreciated

Make sure you are completely stopped before shifting which you should be doing already. It could also be worn linkage, next time it happens, mess with the shifter until you feel it directly in the detent, then see if it jerks

if it only does it when you shift between forward and reverse, i would say play in the rear differential.
