beware doing the fuel filter change

I just did the fuel filter change and took my 32mm socket to the plastic nut and it cracked right off pouring fuel out. Thankfully, my local dealer had another one stocked. I bought a spare too. The location/plastic style, i dont know what ford was thinking. Just giving everybody a heads up! The piece costs me about $25... well worth buying 2.

Happens alot if you're not real careful. I use a strap wrench to turn that bowl after learning of others misfortune on here.

I used a strap and the socket till it broke the seal. Be sure to put some fresh oil on the o-ring.

I think a dry o-ring is part of the problem.

The last Motorcraft fuel filter I purchased had the O-ring pre lubricated.

Yup, all slimy with vaseline or the equivalent.

I've changed my filters every other oil change or about every 15,000 miles and I now have 137,000 miles on my truck. I just changed my fuel filter again. I've not broken or had a problem with my cap. I do oil the O-ring, I do use a strap wrench and my 32 mm socket. Applying pressure to both wrenchs at the same time.

I guess i have to do that from now on... the factory o ring was bone dry too. I had to fight it to come off.

So when you guys are changing filters do you stick with Ford filters? I'm thinking for Warranty I should buy filters from Ford. Or are there others that will still be OK like WIX.

Thanks to the antwan181 I will be very cautious when removing the fuel bowl. I might even buy an extra because it is a 125 mile round road trip to the dealer.

Sgt93 10-22-2014 11:19 PM

Tim, I would stick with Ford. I'm at the point where I let them do the maintenance, that way they can blame themselves :)

Tim Young 10-22-2014 11:22 PM

I think so to Steve, I just thought I would ask and see what the general consensuses was.

Sgt93 10-22-2014 11:37 PM

I wouldn't chance it Tim, it's just not worth it.

Wix is a top quality filter but I use the Motorcraft ones because I can ALWAYS get them cheaper.

Tim Young 10-22-2014 11:47 PM

I'm not worried about cheaper, I'm worried about the warranty.

Sgt93 10-22-2014 11:51 PM

Wix is great for sure, I'm with Tim though about the warranty. I don't want to give them a reason.

I stick to motorcraft as well.

Even pressure with the strap wrench and the socket is the key. Have to go slow, a few pops/squeaks at a time.
