New SD acting up. 7.3
 

2002 7.3 6 speed f250. AFE intake. Boost and pyro. DP tuner.
It's done this 2 x in the last 5 days.

Driving down road. Tach drops to zero (motor seems to cut out) , "Water in fuel" light comes on, check engine light comes on. Then it kicks back on. Not sure what my problem is. And none of the dash lights stay lit up after, they go away.

Tried replacing cps after first time and I've already replaced fuel filter as periodic maintenance. Neither helped.

May I add this is very random and inconsistent.

Old cps is the thinner of the two. New one is the fat one. Yes I know they're both gray but that's all I had on the shelves in garage. (Have a 97 7.3 also so I keep cps on hand).

Could be your fuel heater shorting out. try unplugging it on the back of the fuel bowl.

So just un plug it. And tape it up or something ?

And that's the very back plug toward rear of truck correct ?

Could be bad icp sensor I guess. It's kinda oily. But I did in plug fuel heater. We'll see what happens.

That's the icp down in there. But I don't wanna just be throwing parts at it. But it is a bit oily.

Do you have anything to monitor sensors with. A bluetooth adapter and phone app and for less than $20 your able to see if that ICP is acting up.

No i don't. What do you mean about the app ? And how so with a Bluetooth adaptor ? To the obd port ? Please explain. I'm interested in what you're talking about

if you have an android phone or device there is an app called Torque Pro. That and a bluetooth adapter plugged into the obdii port will let you see what the pcm sees. I'm using an adapter like this


I was skeptical of the adapter given the low price but it works with every PID i've tried to look at so far. Do a search on this forum for "Torque Pro".

If your an iphone user there are apps like Engine Link but I can't speak to how well they work.

So if I do buy the scanner & app what am I looking for once I get them?

The oil in that photo could be from a number of things. You could have an oil leak at the HPOP fittings/hose. It could be oil blowing out of the CAC boot that is just above the ICP. It could be oil mist blowing out of the ICP connector...

To track down an oil leak, first start with a gallon of Simple Green and a spray bottle. Clean everything on your motor as good as possible. Try not to use High Pressure water, Simple Green and a simple water hose will work most of the time.

Once you have a clean motor, you can strat to track down where the oil is coming from.

With a monitoring tool you will be looking at a variety of values to help pinpoint the problem.

1st Voltage -- Seeims simple, but no juice and the truck will die
2nd HP Oil -- If you are driving and reading 1500 psi and it drops, the truck will die

In general, there are a number of sensors you can read and record the data. All of the sensors work in relation to each other through the PCM. If something falls out of spec, the PCM will react accordingly to try and overcome the situation. As you capture data, post it here and we can review and assist you. The more we see about how the truck runs, the better we can help you.

If the check eng light came on you may have codes you can pull up that would lead you in the right direction. you can also monitor sensors while you drive and if you think it's the ICP for example you can watch pressure to see if it gliches or spikes, etc.

Sense I unplugged the fuel pool heater the truck hasn't done it again.

But this morning on my way to work right as I rolled up to a stop sign The RPMs dropped to zero. Water in fuel light glow plug light and check engine light came on and then the truck kicked back on.

If anyone has any other advice for me it would be helpful. I could replace the ICP sensor I suppose but I don't want to spend that money unless I know for sure

Check the tuner connection at the PCM. My Hydra is a bit finicky. Before I got it just right, I'd have a similar issue. Can't recall if the water in fuel light ever came on, but worth looking at.
