Normal start time for a 6.0? When to change glow plugs?
Seems like when I used to turn the key it would start within 1 second (or less after warmup). Pretty much like a regular gasser...
Lately it seems like about 1 1/2 to 2 seconds What is normal for you guys? I have 105,000 miles and always use a the Amsoil diesel fuel conditioner Runs like a top but this later start thingie bugs me... Thanks for the replies Alan from San Diego |
Pretty normal cranking times. Might check and load test your batteries and see if they check out ok.

I've never timed it....but 2 seconds would be my SWAG.
(scientific wild ass guess) |
Mine is a one potato two potato girl, sometime 3 potato when she is ornery and when the temps are below 20* she might take 4 potato's!!:-drink

I would be happy with a bump-n-run start.
But am happy with a grr-n-grr start. Under 2 sec start most times. Sean :-drink :-fire |
Mine starts fairly quickly cold and hot, it's the 5-8 hour inactivity that gives the inconsistent starts, but still under 2 seconds.

Same here. Sometimes it fires like a gasser. Sometimes takes about 3-4 secs.
New batteries, different gas stations, outside air temperatures. Makes no difference. I even tried to park truck up hill and down hill just for S&G's. As long as it starts. I'm good. When it really dies. I wont miss it. |
My crank time is inconsistent. Sometimes it seems to fire as soon as it cranks, other times a few seconds. Started it today after sitting more than 24hrs and glanced at ScanGauge, EOT and ECT were at 92°! Pretty warm here lately.
The glow plug system is pretty good at correctly throwing codes if there's an issue. I wouldn't worry about them until you get a Check Engine Light. |
I have this same situation. Mine started with a touch of the key for a long time and now it is very inconsistent:-X15 I would love to have those quick consistent starts back but as long as it doesn't get out of hand I guess it is ok

I too "was" frustrated with this just like a month ago, my Truck for the last 3 years has Always started immediately & all of the sudden it started taking like 2 seconds to start
I had actually taken a short Video & was going to post on here, but there's a new local shop I stumbled upon (powerstroke gearheads) & I stopped to talk to him & he told me that I have absolutely NO worries, a 2-3 second crank time is very normal. In fact he seemed stunned @ how fast it was starting & that was a long start to me. So I quit worrying about it........ Here's the Video I shot, cranking starts @ 9 second mark & appx 1.5 seconds long :-wink https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEHe...ature=youtu.be |
