Soot and Oil Near Turbo - where to start
 

I have some soot and oil near the turbo and soot on the cooler pipes near the radiator. I assume some action should be taken, but I'm not positive where to start.

Pretty normal given the age of these things...Some Simple Green and low pressure water, clean it. Order some CAC boots from Riffraff, all 6 of them, install....have a beer.

Yeah, I would just say you need new boots. If it's leaking oil and soot, it's also leaking fresh air.

In the second picture it looks like a puddle, is it? If so it's time to pull that turbo off and replace those orings.

Yes, I'm getting some oil in the valley under the turbo. So two possible issues, 1) replace the boots and 2) track down oil source - which is likely not the boots?

For tracking down the oil, I guess the most likely candidate is at the base of the turbo. So clean up that area and watch to see where the oil is coming from to see if it's forming there. Is there some other possible source for the oil?

You got it! Simple green goes a long way for these kind of messes.
Oil should not be flowing through your intercooler pipes at a rate to make a mess if you clean under the hood once In a great while. The only oil that would be in there would come from your crank case vent that's routed into the intake.

If you find yourself looking real deep under the turbo to find said leak/weep...pay close attention to the EBPV actuator....known to leak. They can be rebuild, whether or not people have luck rebuilding them? Can't say.

If you find the leak between the turbo and the pedestal, o-rings, It would be prudent to remove the pedestal as well and replace the or-rings pedestal to the block....You're right there, it's just another set of o-rings. You'll strangle yourself if you go in that far, don't change them, and they start leaking.....cuz it was another 10 minutes and $7.
