89 460 low idle adjust?

my truck has to be started off in first gear but it's real slow so i try 2nd and with enough throttle it will start but it's usually rough. its got the 460 and zf5 transmission. also when driving at low rpms it will buck like crazy. is it the idle that can be adjusted or should i run fuel injector cleaner through it?

There is no idle adjustment. The PCM(computer) controls that function.

How long has this problem been there?

What have you already replaced?

Is the Check Engine Light on?

Have you checked for codes (regardless if you have a CEL on)?

You've got something else going on, bad sensor or something. This isn't idle needing adjustment. Pull your codes, that will give a good idea where to start.

nothings been replaced i just deal with it. there is no engine lights or nothing. my friend has a pretty similar truck and it does the same thing. is it the injectors and can i just clean them with an additive or is it something else?

even starting 1st gear it can stall and kill the motor without giing it some gas.

RIKIL 07-24-2013 07:00 PM

What do you mean starting it in gear? You need the clutch in to start, so it's not in gear. Please elaborate

not starting the vehicle, driving off at a stop light starting

I have a 300 HP Mustang with a 5-speed manual transmission, I still have to give it some gas to get it rolling from a dead stop.

Perhaps I am misinterpreting your problem statement.

the whole issue is while the truck is in motion. the truck seems to like to buck when my foots off the throttle so i rev the engine a little to smooth it out. and say im at a stop sign and then i go to take off it'll want to stall really easy. i don't like using first gear to take off because it's really low gearing and unneccesary to me. so i tend to want to start off in second gear instead off first and it needs a little influence with the throttle so i can do so. not that stalling in second gear is the problem i just thought there is something simple that could be done to help relieve the bucking. maybe i'm just more used to my 6.9 which has a higher idle i just can't understand why it'd be that bad. when started it sounds like the idle is pretty low even to my dad. is it that the injectors could need cleaning or is that how it always is with this engine? sorry for being vague about it.

So, you're taking off in second gear and are complaining that you have to give it throttle to start off?

87diesel 07-24-2013 07:55 PM

no i was talking more about how it bucks so hard at low rpm's

87diesel 07-24-2013 07:56 PM

just thought it should run smoother at those low rpm's

88LX5.0H 07-24-2013 07:58 PM

How low of RPMS are we talking? Do you have a tach?

87diesel 07-24-2013 08:08 PM

naw i wish i did. the previous owner put a brand new motor in it has 60k now. what's the idle supposed to be on these engines?

87diesel 07-24-2013 08:13 PM

i figured it sounded in the 400rpm range but couldn't be sure
