electronic ignition for 6 volt
I just put an electronic ignition into my 1970 F-350. I love it already. The truck had sat for about 6 weeks not able to start it. In a nutshell over the last 3 weeks I have had to replace the solenoid, the coil, and the dist cap, rebuild the starter, and today put in the elect. ignition.
Now I want one in my 54. And that is saying something for a stock guy! I see that Pertronix makes an electronic ignition for a 6 volt Pos ground Ford truck that fits totally inside the dist. cap so no one will know unless they see 2 wires coming out of it, but it is way in the back so who will see it... and who cares! Have any of you done this to your 6 volt trucks? Do you know if anyone besides Pertronix makes one for 6 volt? the price is like $ 145, plus I will probably have to buy a new coil that puts out more voltage so I will have to wait until this spring when I got more money coming in... |

Check out my post (#15) in the link above. I don't know what kind of engine you have, but the best thing is to call Pertronix and speak with their tech support. They'll tell you exactly what you need. I would then contact KMJ Performance (as in my post) to see what they'll charge for the ignitor kit and coil. I've found him to be the cheapest (even cheaper than Amazon).

My truck is Inline 6 with 6 volt positive ground. There is a system available for the 8 cylinder 6 volt systems in both positive and negative ground. |

One little note of consideration, so to speak. If you do your tuning with a dwell/tach meter or dash tachometer it will not read the rpms anymore with electronic system. There are no more pulses from the points opening and closing anymore. The dwell will read just fine. You will just have to tune with a vacuum gauge or timing light with a tach reading if you ever change carbs. Other than that one little hiccup it is great.
