97 f-150 won't idle in drive

My 97 F-150 won't idle in drive, as a matter of fact when you stop at a red light it sometimes dies. I read other post that suggest this is the TCC solnoid (Torque Converter Clutch). I think thats what my problem is also, but would like to confirm it by doing a continuty check of the solnoid. Does anyone know the wiring diagram for this solnoid? I would like to check it from the PCM module if possible. Also I been told this valve can be easily replace by dropping the transmission pan then simply unbolt, unplug. Is it that simple?Ford has priced me one for $47.99.

Hi mjpinksto and welcome to FTE :)

What does it feel like when it dies?
If the TCC is stuck on it will feel like if you were driving a standard and forgot to push in the clutch when you stopped.

whoa there partner. I'd say your Idle Air Control is about to call it quits. This part is on the back of your throttle body, with 2 or 3 bolts securing it, and an quick snap electrical connection. About $75 from the dealer, autozone aint got it.

IT's kind of like a manual thats left in gear.
But a better descripition would be once I start the truck it idles at about 700rpm, then once I put it in gear it drops to 500 or so, then if I slightly depress the pedal to move foward and then release the pedal the rpm goes to about 1000rpm when I move foward, then when I release the pedal the rpm's drop to maybe 100 or 200 and sometimes the truck dies.

That does sound more like an IAC problem. I think I'd be looking in that area first.
Let us know what you find.

Think the guys are on key with the IAC, I had mine tuned up when the check engine light started glaring at me, which was on 'cuz of a bad IAC. Before then, the truck wouldn't budge while idling, in forward or reverse. I just assumed it was from my 4.6 being tired out at 133k miles. After the tuneup and IAC replacement, the truck can almost roll itself into 2nd gear just idling.

I also just had my heads, left and right rebuilt and am now having a idle problem. After reading these posts and looking in my manual I found a section on IMRC actuator. It also controls airflow and is located in back of the plenum. This part has a grommet that I damaged and patched with modified hardware store parts. Ill check it again tomorrow morning. This might be my problem, and yours.

I looked this morning and found a loose connection at the AIC.
Finally a little luck. The IMRC regulates air flow above and below 3000 rpm, not affecting idle speed
