Cam/Exhaust Project
So, I'm finally getting around to doing long tubes. As the header bolts are gone, I was going to swap the heads to speed up the process to a weekend instead of waiting on a machine shop. While I'm doing all that, might as well do the cam and make it a full top end. Going with stock heads with some porting and Pace Setter 70-2221's, along with a flat tappet to save a bit of cash.
For a cam I was thinking Comp 35-255-5. I was going to get it with their small kit, which includes lifters and their timing chain set. So 2 questions: -What do you guys think on the cam -Does anyone know how it performs -Mike truck's in the sig. ('93 351w) |
get the stock heads ported as much as possible, but that is a great cam for this truck, iot will give a good power increase all across the power band, i do not have one but know others that do and they love it, the cam i reccomend most

With more displacement you can throw more duration at it and get quite a bit more HP without sacrificing low rpm TQ, so I will always suggest the Crane 444232 in a 5.8.
|
That was my other cam choice, but ends up adding ~$150 to the final cost of the project. When you say more displacement, do you mean a 5.8 as compared to a 5.0, or more than 5.8? I'm assuming the latter (for now), but if not I might consider the 444232.
-Mike Edit: Looking at the specs of the crane again, I noticed that it's bottom end RPM spec is 1400 RPM, 400 higher than the Comp. With the 5spd, I'm not sure if I'd want that, even if it puts out more power/future options. Also, there would effectively be no price difference. Also, do you know if the lifters it comes with will work with stock push rods? (I was planning to replace them anyways) |

Conanski, That's exactly what I wanted to hear. I was hoping that those numbers didn't mean much. I know that you loved that cam, but I wasn't sure if a torque converter was compensating for low torque at the extreme bottom end.

So, 1.5, 1.6, or 1.7 Ratio rockers with the 444232?
-Mike |
1.6 rockers are stock on these motors so go with 1.7s to get just a little more power accross the board, total lift is still well within what even the stock springs can handle too.

Great, Thanks!

Crane 444232 with 1.7s and long tubes. You won't be disappointed. It's a great combo
