I read that link... doesn't he contradict himself?
I dunno.. now I'm really confused. I know for a fact, the 12v Snap-On one and Craftsman 12V adjustable timing lights are not working right on my 6V car. But they are working fine on my other 12v stuff. That much i do know.

So where does this put the dwell meter? Had the same problems with it too. May have to comb the swap meets next year for some old 6v tune-up tools....

I read some more links which said to use a 12v source to power the light... like a ride mower battery or a tractor battery. Guess if you could just pull a car next to it, you could use its battery power. So, it sounds like you need a 12 volt source unless your light is made specifically for 6 volts or has a 6v - 12v switch. And I'm also going to assume the same would apply to a dwell meter / tach. Give them a 12 volt supply.

I use my old Craftsman timing light on 6V stuff.....it seems to work fine, just not as bright of a "flash". The easiest way I've found to set timing is with a vacuum gauge. Using MANIFOLD vacuum with the engine running at proper idle, vac advance plugged off, advance dist to it's highest vac reading. When it starts to stumble, back it off 1-2 numbers. Works on my flatty....

Dano78 12-07-2011 08:40 PM

Yep, used the vacuum method many times over. Didn't on the 6, last time. May have to try that one too. In the past when i've swapped in much larger cams and changed induction setups I would set them quite differently.
(Vehicle must be an automatic)I'd chock the wheels and have a buddy anchor the brakes, and put the car in gear. Standing to the driver's side I'd run the throttle bringing it up to full stall (varies depending on the stall of the converter -around 2000-3000 rpm) and roll the distributor back and fourth till I get max advance without any pinging from the engine.
Doing it this way has given me amazing results, but it is a little dangerous and you really have to trust your buddy helping you not to let off the brake!! :D

A small bite out of the elephant...

I got a box-o-parts with the truck. A couple of taillight assemblies were in there, and I decided to use two to make one. The one I think is the original is in pretty bad shape, so I want to use the newer one.

Replacement

I removed the mounting arm from the original and after cleaning it up, installed it on the replacement.

And here's what it looks like on the truck.

"New" front bumper

Got my new bumper from Josh Madsen yesterday. Had to set it in place for a photo op. I think it makes the truck look better even before cleaning it up.

Betsy with Christmas decorations and her new bumper.

After sanding and primer. I ran out of daylight before I could paint it. Looks great for a 60 year old bumper.

I may get it painted and installed next weekend. But taking down Christmas decorations may take precedence.

I got lots of truck parts for Christmas, so I'll add more as I get them done. :)

EDIT: I moved the pics in my Photobucket album without thinking it would screw up the links here. Well, Duh!

SECOND EDIT: Photobucket wants to rob me of $60 a year so I can put pics online. So I moved them to my computer and reloaded them.

Thanks. The bumper smoothed out remarkably well with just a sander. I'm going to paint it black, as was stock. Eventually, it'll be black powdercoat, but that'll have to wait until I'm ready to do the running boards, bumper and probably the stakebed. :)

Is the COE bumper the same as the large trucks? I think I read somewhere on this site that it is.

That can't be a bumper.....

...a real bumper would be bent, dented, and twisted up like a pretzel....LOL

That looks really good

That would be a negative. COE uses it's own bumper, as does the conventional F1-3 and F4-6. COE's have wider fenders than conventional, so I'm guessing the bumper is wider, too.

Looks great... Shop around I love mine

Planing on doing the running boards next and the wing window frames next... Haven't had luck finding a rear bumper yet.... So still kicking around trying a front bumper as the rear bumper

51PanelMan 12-26-2011 09:11 PM

COE bumpers should be the same as F7-8 trucks.

I can't say one way or the other, as my book doesn't cover the big jobs. But the part number does indicate application for COE. That's not to say the big jobs wouldn't have used the COE part. I just don't have info to verify that.
