Help! power steering hose went

I started her up this morn ('95 PSD) and this hose spit right out of the fitting followed by p/s fluid. Do I need to replace the whole hose or get a new fitting put on? Money is tight...

The high pressure hose needs to be replaced/repaired properly. The return or low pressure hose can be repaired with a clamp sometimes. Not sitting here looking at my set up your pic looks like the Hi pressure side.

Same EXACT thing happened to me...I started it up and heard a "POP" but still had power steering and charging etc..(I was hoping it was a belt)...It was the bottom hose. I went to "Track Auto" and got a replacement hose (about 40 bucks I think), replaced it added some PSF turned it all the way to the left and right pumped the brakes a few times, topped it off and it has been strong ever since. Easy fix

Here is my thread when mine went: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...xtra-time.html No other info really. Oh, I would bring the old one with you...there are a few sizes. good luck!

Pretty common thing.
If your truck was built after Aug 12?? '97 or so it will have a different hose that the parts stores usually don't stock.
Otherwise all the local stores here have the older ones in stock, which you should find for your '95.
Price isn't too bad and definietly not worth trying to repair the old one

I'm at autozone right now and they have the hose for $25. Mine just started spraying out. I think it is the orings. When I took it off there were 2 orings- a white hard plastic one and a black rubber one. Do I news both on there?

Copedawg 06-30-2011 07:29 PM

I don't remember the "Pacifics" but I would use what ever it comes with. Ifr it comes with 2 I would use them both....if they are different sizes

Not trying to high-jack the thread- How many o-rings does the high pressure line have on it? Mine had a black rubber one on it and a white plastic one also.

RRranch 06-30-2011 09:30 PM

The white one is a back up ring to keep the o ring from blowing out. Some use it, some don't. If the threads and flare are the same then it will work fine.

I saw one of you say you paid 40 bucks for the bottom hose. You got ripped. It's nothing more than 3/8 transmission cooler line. I also very highly recommend putting a 3/8 inline transmission filter on it when you have to replace it. They are cheap insurance.
If you got a whole bottom hose with a new cooler and everything that wraps around in the crossmember then seriously you wasted your money. Next time just cut the metal tube right below where they crimped the hose on and hose clamp a new hose on with that filter in the middle. It's just a return hose. Absolutely no pressure on it.

I picked up a high pressure replacement hose from my local parts store. They had it on hand. $27 and good to go. It was a one-beer job. I had to re-use the fitting from the old one (see pic) that screwed into the p/s pump. Thanks for the help guys.

Not true for all of us living in the salt/rust belt.
Them dam things rust through as easily as brake lines do.

Also, if you run larger tires, you can drill out that fitting that goes into the pump just a hair more, maybe 1 drill size, and you won't believe how easily your steering turns.
I did that on my '96 with 33" tires about 10 years ago and it's quite different from my stock '97.

The line blows because its a poor design and rusts inside the collar.

Spray it down with fluid film before install. =)

Fluid film will keep it from rusting Jim. =)
