How to replace a serpentine belt

My buddy has a 2001 7.3 and we are planning to replace the serpentine belt. He has the dual alternator. Anyone have a step by step. I just finished mine on 6.0. Need the routing and any tips that anyone has gained.

I've never had to replace a dual alt belt but the procedure should be similar to single alt versions. 1/2" breaker bar in the hole and release tension. Under the tensioner assembly, there is a metal tab that you can use to hold the pulleys while you route the belt. Use the breaker bar to swing the tension pulley so you feel the force of the spring pushing against you and then swing the clip up so it hooks on to a notch on the bracket. Then while holding the spring clip in place, slowly release the tension on the pulley so the spring clip is taking the load, this will make it easier to route the belt although using the clip is not really that necessary to be honest. Sometimes that clip is missing so it doesn't really matter anyway.

Here is a photo that shows the routing of the belt for dual alts.

On some models, you must remove the top radiator hose if it goes "thru" the belt..
There should be a label showing the belt routing in the engine compartment..

Thanks Stewart! The photo I posted must be incorrect. Good thing you had more detailed info. :-X22

I've got the dual alt. and just replaced the belt a couple months back. As stated above just relieve tension on the tensioner and R&R belt. Really easy! Fun fact: I calculated belt length at 11.5'.

clintbonnie 06-25-2011 10:00 PM

Greg.. that's a great image of a 7.3l.. what year model would it be..? It sure not a 99 with that pulley set up..

crazymut 06-25-2011 10:14 PM

This is some convenient info, my alt went bad today so I will be changing it hopefully tomorrow. I will probably put my new belt on at same time. Thanks

Stewart_H 06-26-2011 12:29 AM

Greg, I didn't really look at the picture, I just thought the diagrams I posted in the Excursion forum (see the link) would be helpful here too, along with your pic. But now that you mention it, the picture is off a little!

I am not sure what year that is...:-huh
I found that photo online and thought it would make a good cover page for my PSD binder. :)

I just clicked on the image to save it to my hard drive and it saved as 2002stroker.jpg

Stewart,

The small diagram you posted shows the tensioner relief going down, or "clockwise". That doesn't seem right, even for a dual setup.

It also shows what appears to be an A/C compressor clutch below the tensioner. That would be for a gasser, not a diesel, wouldn't it?

I'd lift up on the breaker bar to relieve belt tension if the actual belt routing looks like the full diagrams given.

I just did this a few weeks ago. No lock on mine(or I didn't find it) Just follow the sticker under the hood. It's not bad with two people, but is nearly impossible alone. You have to keep moving from top to bottom of the truck and I kept knocking one section off putting the next on. Opening the new belt a few hours ahead of time and let all the kinks work out before hand makes it much easier.

I got all the diagrams (if you click on the link in my above post you'll see all of them, including the one's for the V10, the 6.0, and the 5.4) from the Ford FMC Dealerconnection website for the Ford Technicians and Service Writers.

Stewart, it's the very first one in Post #4 above, the image named "60Lalternator1.jpg".

Given the file name, it turns out to apparently be for a 6.0, not a gasser, but isn't applicable to a 7.3.
