Checking Transmission Fluid Level

Ok, I admit I am a little confused for something that should be so simple. On a 1999 Super Duty with 7.3 Auto trans you can check it when cold or hot, right? Cold should be anywhere on the "C" cold portion of dipstick? Hot can be anywhere with in the top "H" indicator? OR, should it be when cold at the top of the "C" level and when hot at the top of the "H" indicator?

I like mine to be at the top of the scale depending on the temperature. Mine doesn't get "hot" per say, but if the temp is roughly 130-140* I consider that hot or up to normal operating temperature. I would rather be at the top of the scale than at the bottom.

Just make sure your engine is running!

In my opinion there is no accurate way to check the ATF when the transmission is cold. Always warm up the trans and check the fluid with the truck parked on a level surface, transmission in park, and the engine idling.

The fluid level should be in the cross hatched area. Anywhere in the cross hatch is fine. It does not need to be right to the top.

Thanks again Mark...
