How loud is your diesel Ex

My truck is super loud. It is completely stock - nothing done to the engine/exhuast system. But, hubby has an '08 F-350 super duty. His super duty is super quiet. Mine rumbles down the road - I mean you can hear a noticeable difference in the two!! Can't hear it in the cab with the windows up but quite loud when you are outside the truck. So much so that you can't carry on a normal conversation standing next to it without raising your voice a bit.

His '08 doesn't have the power that the Ex has either. Are those newer engines that much weaker and quieter? Or is mine just over the top loud?

Just wonderin'.

Front Runner 01-04-2012 07:58 AM

7.3's seem to be the loudest with the 6.0 in a close 2nd.

I was at the gas station last night & was parked on the other side of the pump from a running 7.3 F250 while the owner fueled up. My God, it was loud! I couldnt hear my V10 at all before I shut it off. To be quite honest it was a little annoying. Just didnt feel like hearing a bunch of noise and racket at that time. Normally, it doesnt bother me but I just didnt feel like hearing it then.

Excurvelle 01-04-2012 08:16 AM

When we first got ours and my daughter (5 at the time) was with me driving home she said it sounded like her school bus. Yes, a 6.0 is loud especially when it is cold started but that is the sound of power.

Houston Cowgirl 01-04-2012 10:03 AM

OH! Don't get me wrong. I like the loud. I just wondered if all the 6.0s are like that since the newer models don't seem to be as such.

gmcbride 01-04-2012 10:06 AM

Yes, and I understand the 6.0L was designed by International as a bus engine w/o all the lovely smog stuff. Hence, better service records....:-wink

Gene Horr 01-04-2012 10:17 AM

Didn't Ford change the injection method after the 7.3? I seem to recall reading something about 10 years ago that the company was claiming a change that would result in a quieter diesel.

Something to keep in mind that it is time for exhaust leaks to start popping up due to simple age. Even a small leak can result in a noticeable increase in sound.

roasterpoker54 01-04-2012 10:36 AM

My 7.3 is loud as well, a couple of things ive done to quite it down a bit is fuel addiditive, and changed the oil with syenthitic, it seemed to help to help some, but its just the nature of the beast i think:)

Toreador_Diesel 01-04-2012 11:34 AM

The 6.0 used to be relatively quiet when they were first available in 2003 with Pilot Injection. Not long after PI had to be disabled due to some issues it caused. With a HEUI injector system, it's hard to keep things quiet.

Your husband's 2008 is a common rail truck which makes it relatively easy to keep quiet.

The newer 2008 motors are quieter and stronger, the only reason it feels like it does have the power your X has is because of the DPF or Diesel Particulate Filter. Without the DPF, those trucks run and pull hard.

Sunline Fan 01-04-2012 12:43 PM

Lisa, if your hubby is looking to make his louder and gain quite a bit of power too, check out this link. From everything I've read, they seem to be the king of 6.4 PSD tuning.

Spartan Diesel Technologies

After going with the Spartan on the F-450, we won't be going back to stock, unless of course it would have to go to the dealer for something.

My 6.0 is rather quite unless it's cold, at least when I compare it to my neighbors dodge diesel. we're both bone stock, too. His is noticeably louder, or I just adapted an ear for mine.

My 05 6.0L is what I'd call fairly loud, but its not industrial diesel loud. Like most have said, when cold, it can wake the dead but after I switched to synthetic and by running Diesel Kleen mine quieted down quite a bit. Once warm though I'd say mine just sitting and idling is not much louder than a gasser. I'm bone stock, with a turbo back like I'm planning on getting I know that will louden it up a bit.

I think the technology in newer diesels is amazing and sure I'd love it if my motor was a CRD and not have to deal with HPOP issues but all the emissions control tech on the new motors seriously rob them of power. That's the cost of progress, I guess. Its what caused many to say the 6.0 is "inferior" to the 7.3.

JaySVX 01-04-2012 10:58 PM

Yeah, ther'es no mistaking it for not being a diesel, but it's not an industrial diesel for sure. For those who hate the noise of a diesel,b ut still need a diesel, the 6.0 is the way to go, it's the quietest I've heard so far.

hasteranger 01-05-2012 12:35 AM

my father in law got a 2008 work truck and its almost as quiet as a gas engine, way way quieter than my 04 6.0. His has twin turbos and gets better power than mine, but he says it doesn't get that great of mileage.

I just got a 04 Eddie Bauer 6.0L so it is loud to me but friends said it's not as loud as the 7.3L he got.

Tylus 01-05-2012 02:58 AM

I won't say the 6.0 is overly loud...but it is definately clackety. I've given up on drive-throughs. They just can't hear. I just drive up to the window now and place my order there :-X22

My wife has said the same thing to me. I've come home around the same time my daughter was due home riding the bus. My wife heard me coming and was in front yard thinking it was the bus.

hasteranger 01-05-2012 06:24 PM

its diesel etiquette to always shut your truck off at drive throughs!

gmcbride 01-05-2012 06:43 PM

Really???? Or should they have better technology? Not everyone drives a Prius. Just sayin'....:-jammin:-jammin

Yeah, give another American a job. Sit someone out there at the speaker to call my order back in so I don't have to wear out my starter and batts any quicker!

Sader 01-05-2012 10:01 PM

It seems my 6.0 is quieter than other 6.0's side by side but I attribute that to the synthetic oil I run, or lack of synthetic they do not run.

My 7.3L idling next to my 6.0L - the 7.3L is quieter.:-huh:-huh:-huh:-huh

Dunno, but when cold and lightly loaded the 7.3 rattles the house as it pulls away. :-winkI love it! :-X22

Cheers

There is a company in diesel power magazine that runs ads saying they have a "stealth" tune that makes your diesel quiet enough to go through drive throughs. I have no idea how the hell that would work but I've always thought it was interesting.

The steering wheel knob really sets it apart :D

(you should try resizing that photo so we don't have to scroll to the right to read everyone's posts)

DP Tuner offers a drive-thru tune. Not sure how it works either. I thought about splurging on it but I don't use drive-thrus often and I've had pretty good luck yelling at the speaker and them hearing me.

It's all about pitch. A high voice sounds louder than a low voice at the same decibel level. But the low voice carries farther. I bet the 7.3 is easier to hear from inside the house.

Yep! Exactly! Sounds good too! I like the way both of them sound in different ways.

I was on the drumline in hs... snare drums hurt your ears but its the bass drums you hear from a mile away....

A co worker just bought either an 11 or 12 F250 4 door 4X4 6.7L Diesel and it is super quiet, hardly any vibration either. I saw something strange, it has a large fuel filler door for fuel and some other additive? The exhaust doesn't smell of diesel either. He said it the new diesel emissions stuff. Weird...:-huh

Yeah, that's a urea based fluid that gets injected in to the exhaust. More emissions control equipment. The current diesels are damn near zero emissions.

hasteranger 01-06-2012 11:10 PM

there is no longer an exception for diesels so they now have to meet the same criteria as gas, even though thats not fair since diesels generally get better economy to offset the emissions. I would not care to own a diesel newer than the one I have. Did you know the new ones actually have two seperate cooling systems??? one for the motor and one for the emissions stuff. I think I heard they even take different coolant!! thats just a bit too complex for me. Not like the newer direct injection gasoline engines are any better... I was finally feeling like I could troubleshoot fuel injection.

radmacks 01-07-2012 12:18 AM

My 7.3 is stock and loud. I enjoy the fact that I can hear it start when I use my command start, I don't even have to look out the window lol.

Tylus 01-07-2012 03:57 AM

can you resize that pic?

A 2011 F-350 drove by the wife and I yesterday in the Wallyworld Parking lot. I asked her if she heard anything weird about it. "NO"...told her it was a PSD as well and she said "why isn't it as loud as yours?"

it would be nice to have a little less clatter...but then again that noise is part of why I love having a PSD

white Buffalo 01-07-2012 08:02 AM

When it's cold out - boy is she loud and cackly. Reminds me of the commercial where the engine jumps out of the car........}>:-jammin

Jody at DP-Tuner has a drive-thru tune that adjusts the injectors so the engine quiets down.

Different injectors make a world of difference.

HEUI injectors are loud.

I thought diesels clattered from the high compression ratio and cylinder pressures... how does it adjust the injectors to quiet it down?

Not being a tuner, I don't have the knowledge to answer your question, plus, I've never asked Jody for specifics. I just remember him telling me it has to do with the injectors and the tune, when he was live tuning my truck.
