Bad strange noise form engine

My engine or trans is making a nose that sounds sorta like a pot that is engaged I took the belt off and still makes the noise
The noise goes away at 1200 rpm and has got louder in the last day just started yesterday
Any ideas?

14psd 06-06-2011 11:53 AM

need some more info. can you go into more details about your problem

arkredneck 06-06-2011 12:10 PM

It's a noise that sounds like a pot engaged it goes away at 1200 rpm it's not an asseory off the belt and it's not the down pipe truck runs good shifts good

Talyn 06-06-2011 12:13 PM

a pot engaged? i have no idea what your talking about.

arkredneck 06-06-2011 03:23 PM

More like a metal heat shield rattling and brakes grinding together does this idling

strokin'_tatsch 06-06-2011 03:49 PM

5 speed transmission? If so and you have a single mass flywheel, gear rollover from the transmission. If it's a 5 speed with the stock dual mass flywheel, it's probably ready to grenade. If it's an auto, not sure what to tell you. lol

get us a video

arkredneck 06-06-2011 05:28 PM

It's a auto and I noticed that the fuel filter lid pulses with the engine idling I don't know how to post videos with a I phone

arkredneck 06-06-2011 05:35 PM

I've checked all the simple things I can think of trans inspection cover the down pipe the truck shows 342k miles I hope it ain't a wrist pin or rod or bearing

427 fordman 06-06-2011 05:44 PM

As far as the fuel filter lid, how high fuel pressure you have? I've heard of that with higher pressures (around 75 or a little more). It's gonna be really hard to guess at that noise without a video for me. If the noise goes away with rpms, you can bet its not internal like you're worrying about. It would get worse in that case.

arkredneck 06-06-2011 09:16 PM

I can make a video put have no clue on how to post it
I even hooked a 12000 lbs trailer to it today and it the noise just goes awAy at 1300 rpm or so
Ive head it at 3000 rpm and no noise but at idle it's horrible

Get a piece of garden hose. Hold to your ear and locate the sound that way.
Then get back with us on what you find.

Do you have the stock DP or a good DP, it could be loose or touching the firewall just a guess.:-huh

redman84 06-07-2011 12:19 PM

arkredneck 06-07-2011 03:42 PM

arkredneck 06-07-2011 05:53 PM

It's difenatly sounds like it's coming from the torque convertor

DIYMechanic 06-07-2011 08:41 PM

Cracked Flex Plate?

arkredneck 06-07-2011 09:03 PM

I didn't check that but will sounds like a rattle and clunk and grind all together but still goes away

DIYMechanic 06-08-2011 05:56 AM

Yeah, check the flex plate real good. You may have a cracked one. They can make some really strange noises when they are on their way out and you DON'T want to let it go until it comes apart.

arkredneck 06-08-2011 07:37 PM

Well I can't seer nothing wrong with flex plate so I took the dp off still has a noise so I guess I'm gone pull the trans and see if my noise Is motor or trans I'm gonna be mad once I do it and find that it's something stupid simple

DIYMechanic 06-08-2011 08:38 PM

Does the truck make this noise in all gears? Reverse, Neutral, etc?

arkredneck 06-09-2011 07:43 AM

Yes and park just idling it will go away when the engine has a load

arkredneck 06-09-2011 07:44 AM

I really wish I could get a video Of it doing this I've parked it for now and am driving my other psd with 15" of lift and 42" tires to work I hooe it's simple

arkredneck 06-11-2011 10:19 AM

Thanks guys I found the noise the flex plate is completely broke in 2 pieces atleast it wasn't the engine 342000 miles so I can't complain to much

pjwoolw 06-11-2011 01:39 PM

Wide Open Performance has cyro treated flex plates available if you want to go in that direction.

arkredneck 06-11-2011 06:08 PM
