Thanks @FuzzFace2 and @Benztechnc , for your comments. I will check the fluid levels and report back. Also thought about getting a magnet and sticking a camera under the truck while driving might help to narrow the search down a bit.....

Also i was about to order the rubber parts for the doors, they rattle so much while driving and its beyond anoying..... Thought about trying dennis carpenter for those parts.

@Ug666 sounds like you made some good progress! Do you have a garage to work in? Picture looks good, did you give her a name yet? :-X21

I've got the borrow of my neighbours garage for short periods of time, not ideal but it does give me a hard floor rather than dirt for the cherry picker to roll on.
As to a name, I've called it every name under the sun at various points...

It's going to be the better-halfs so she'll likely name it once it's in use. If past experience is anything to go by it'll be known as the F100 or red (or whatever colour we decide on later) truck. I'll probably continue to invent appropriate names on the spur of the moment as circumstances dictate...

I've got to get new window runners and beltline rubbers for mine so I'll be interested to know where yours come from and any problems you have.

Dennis carpenter reproductions is here in concord, they used to be open to the public when I did my old 66 slick and my dad did his mustang. Maybe a field trip the day of the dinner.... lol.

superspost 02-05-2019 06:04 PM

I was actually thinking about that... go there friday after dinner and look at some parts :-whud

@Ug666 i will def let you know what the parts look like.... i found this post helpful... there seem to be some premium suppliers that are pretty expensive... not sure i want to spend $800 only on the window rubbers just yet...

There’s also a small salvage yard right up the rd in kannapolis that had a few of those 70s fords out in it. It’s an older fellow that has the yard at his house. Next time I’m up that way I’ll see what he has. I know most of his vehicles are not wrecks just vehicles he has bought to part out...

I bet y'all thought this thread is dead but with the warmer weather and the help of Josh, I got some progress on the "holy" truck and wanted to share...

Let me share what has happened:

Noise Issue
  1. Last Thursday Josh came out and took the truck for a drive in the neighborhood in an attempt to locate where the grinding noise is coming from... (here is a video of the drive:
    )
    • you can hear the noise only under load
    • in the end, we both thought it would be somewhere from the rear axle
    • checking fluid levels, the rear seemed to be missing some lubrication
  2. This Sunday I bought 1qt of oil and to my surprise, the whole bottle went in without it overflowing, so there is still need for more...
  3. I took it for a short drive around the block, but the noise was still there... maybe one of the bearings is shot?

Other progress

  1. Started to disassemble the passenger door window assembly to replace the rubbers. Will send some pictures
  2. Glued the rearview mirror back (it had fallen off)
  3. Checked for voltage on the speakers in the door, and to my surprise, it looks like the radio is still working, just the speaker is shot.... -> any suggestions for a good speaker that fits that space in the door?
  4. Wanted to change the oil in the transfer case but I think I bought the wrong oil.. the guy at advanced auto said it would be W50, but after reading in the forums it said 80W90, also it looks like the transfer case is leaking from the front bearing and I was thinking of replacing the seal at the same time.
Thanks, Josh for coming out last Thursday, it was awesome to get your help!!!

I will post some pictures in a little bit.... hopefully i can share more updates soon and get a definitive solution for the grinding noise.

anytime Sir. That rear end, by my guess will take somewhere between 2-3 qts. It could be a faulty bearing. But since it' only on load, I'm thinking more of the pinion to ring gear contact. But a 9 inch is easy enough to tear down, if that's the case. I think your first step is still the carb. Let me know if you want to tear it off one day and bring it over. We can knock it out in an evening, and you can have it back on the next day.

Sparky83 04-08-2019 03:51 PM

i was thinking R&P too.. mine howled right before it went.. Pinion bearing went and then the gears beat the crap outta each other...

77mud 04-08-2019 07:01 PM

If it was that low its possible you've hurt the pinion bears. They typically make the most noise under load from my experience.

Benztechnc 04-09-2019 08:25 AM

Oh, as for the speaker, I'd check out Crutchfield. They should be able to provide the spec and size of the door speaker and get all your information there. I'd go ahead and pick up another qt. put that in. Then check the front, if the rear was neglected, the front probably was as well.

Carburetor rebuilt started

Last weekend I started on the carb rebuild project and everything looked pretty good until i hit the second jet - it just does not want to come out. I've been letting it soak in WD40 for over 24h but it is still stuck....

@supersport How is the Carb rebuild coming?

superspost 04-25-2019 10:38 AM

i broke the easyout inside the jet 2 nights ago... brought it into work to see whether it could be drilled out on a kneemill.... ... sooooo not very good :-banghead:-X24

Benztechnc 04-25-2019 04:31 PM

yeah. that doesn't sound too good. Let me know what, if anything I can do to help. but easy out's and milling machines sounds pretty bad for a carb rebuild.

found myself a "new" old license plate, that I can apparently use! :)
