Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I don't check messages like I should. The tailgate is a 1949. I got it from Northern Classics when I bought the bed. I didn't want the box letters. I don't think it would work if you use the stock chains but I wasn't going to use them anyway. Hope that helps and sorry about the tardyness
