That's a very rock solid engine and, probably more importantly, rock solid transmission. The 5.0L V8 was mated with the 4-speed overdrive transmission rather than the 5 speed auto that was used with the V6 Explorer. If the engine and transmission were cared for reasonably well, they should be very reliable and outlast the body. The DPFE sensor is about the only common issue with that engine that I'm recalling.

I am looking at getting a 1998 5.0 Explorer, what do you think about that year and motor.
