Buying a rental Expy?

Would you guys consider buying a vehicle that started its life as a rental? Even if it has a clean carfax? I've heard two theories. One is that you run like hell because people drive them like... they're a rental vehicle, and the other is that they are maintained to the hilt because of company policies and they are an ok bet.
I've found an Expy with really low miles, clean carfax and only two owners in 5 years (one rental and one private). I know that you never really know what a used vehicle was driven like, even a private owner that was a sweet old lady, but what do you guys think?

The fact that it was a rental wouldn't scare me off. Those abused rental car stories are overblown.

I don't think that you should let the "rental" be a problem. Some rental companies turn thier cars in at about 3,000 miles and the fact that the truck has had only one wner after being retired from being a rental tells me that it is a pretty good truck. If it wasen't it would have been traded several times by now.

Maybe...

I also think the notion that they are so well maintained is overblown. You would be lucky if they even stuck to the basics in the manual, much less over maintained them.

I have rented several 4x4's and typically when I do so it is because I am going to take it off road. One went back with a pretty good rattle in the front, a couple others a little banged up underneath from hitting things on the trail. The cars I have rented usually get a lot of full throttle treatment and other product testing.

The cars they use for rentals are common models. I would find a privately owned one and "meet the parents". The deals are not good enough that I would take the chance buying a rental.

It's 5 years out and had another owner after being a rental, so even if it was abused it doesn't appear to have caused any problems. I wouldn't consider this any differently than just a plain old used car.

...if you're a cynical person, or a person that shows little respect for the property of others and misuses or abuses it. I would certainly have to agree with you; that type of reprehensible person would certainly know if rental vehicles are not treated well.

Have had my 06 eb 4x4 for about a year now. It had 30k on it when I got it and has 50k now. It started life as a rental and then was wrecked (not on car fax). I had to replace a few things but I bought it right. The accident was not real specific but it was within the first 3 months. A private owner had it since then. So I pretty much figured that if it had problems they would have shown up years ago. Absolutely love the vehicle. Thanks, Mike

I knew there had to be a reason why alcohol and firearms just seemed so right together

Not only that, but look at all of the people now married that would still be single if it weren't for alcohol. You know all about that, right?

My neighbor mentioned that certain years had issues with the transfer cases and that it was a pretty wide spread problem. He didn't know the years though. Any comment on that? I want to make sure I test out every little feature when I test drive it. Also, can the truck be driven in A4H on dry pavement or is that a no-no like in 4H? I noticed that the switch was in the A4H position in some pictures.

Ok, back to the bar talk

A4WD is fine in the dry, it only engages when it detects slip, and if it detects slip it is ok to be engaged. You can drive it in 4H on dry pavement to see if it engages, just don't turn. I've never heard of a transfer case issue with Expys. There are threads here with people discussing transfer case shift motors, but I'd hardly say is is wide spread. A few here and there which is pretty common for any issue.
