Fuel Mileage Solved

I think anyway. I have been frustrated because my friend gets better gas mileage with his truck which is exaltly the same as mine, except mine is a manaul and his is automatic. I have been checking and changing sensors and cleaning this and that with no success. Well someone suggested I check the rear end gear ratios. I didn't think Ford would have that many different variations for the same truck so I never bothered to look before. Turns out there is another thing different between our trucks. His has 3.08 gears and mine has 3.55, atleast according to the axle code in the door jam (my code is 19 and his is 18). With gas prices the way they are it might be worth changing my gears for better mileage. I don't tow stuff so I don't really need to the lower gears. Thanks for the help and hopefully this info will help someone else.

Fuel Mileage Solved

Those gears should make almost zero difference in mileage. I went from 3.08s to 3.73s. Around town mileage IMPROVED from about 14.5 to 16.5. Towing mileage also improved about 0.5 MPG. My highway mileage took a hit, it dropped from 19 to 16.5. Unless you're driving exclusively on the highway, leave the 3.55s in. The truck will perform better and haul and tow better. Even if you run highways a lot, you'll probably never drive it enough to pay for the cost of the swap.
