have a 99 ford ranger 4x4 xlt. oscillating clacking noise from rear differential. all new u-joints. changed oil and inspected. seems to be louder and more distinct at lower speeds. Any ideas ?
Did this problem come about slowly over time, or suddenly after some event????
Are you certain the noise is coming from the differential itself????
Is the noise there if it's coasting out of gear????
Is it louder when taking off from a stop, or when accelerating????
Maybe try raising the rear of vehicle on stands, so that the rear wheels clear the ground, & have someone start the engine & go through the gears while you see if you can better isolate where the noise is coming from.
While you are doing the things Pawpaw suggests, also listen to wheel bearings on each side. Is one noisier than the other or are both noisy or none of the above?
