Possible misfiring and whining sound at first start
Ok, I have a 1998 F-150 4.2 XL 2-wheel drive. And it's been garage kept for most of it's life until now, has around 58,000 miles on it with my help. Had about 48,000 when I got it, nothing has been replaced on it. And I noticed that when I plain out at 50 MPH and start up this slight hill down the road from my house it acts like it's missing. Really short bursts of it slowing down and then acting normal again, this usually lasts for about 10 seconds total and then it doesn't happen again for the rest of the day. Almost like it can't make it's mind up on if it wants to shift from 3rd to 4th.
And now my other question is about this whining sound it makes. This normally happens only when I first start it in the morning and goes away after it warms up. If I give the engine time to cool off from that start, it will make that whining sound again. The only thing I could think of is the belt is about worn out. Any ideas? Thanks!
The whining sounds like a worn out belt to me. Get a new gatorback belt and ill bet the whining goes away. As far as the missing, when you go up that hill is the only time it does that? It doesnt do it while idling or anything? Pull your plugs and wires and see if you have any water on the plugs or plug wires. Clean them all up, add some dialectic grease to them and see if it still does it. If not, try to get it to come up with a CEL and get that read, if you can.

Yes, the only time it does that is when I'm going up a hill. I did change my stock air filter to a high flow intake air filter from Spectre and now I don't have torque problems anymore. And the other post I made about the unbearable noise it makes when I turn the A/C on, is gone now. Apparently, that stock paper filter was flowing so low I was getting robbed of torque and all around air flow. So that noise was just not enough air getting through.
(it was a seperate post by the way)
