Hi i got a 73 f-250 4wd 4speed, that i am going to put a 77 460 into. The 460 was on a automatic, the flex plate has 164 teeth. Do i need a flywheel with 164 teeth? Any help is apreciated thanks, jake
Hi Jake, Usually as a rule on most issues, a lot of things like motor stands & transmissions will swap over between Modifieds "meaning 351M's" and 460's. You've probably been running a 360 or 390, yours being a 73.
Seems like I remember reading in a place or two that a 4 speed flywheel from a modified wouldn't work on a 460. I may be wrong about this but seems like where it bolts on to the crank is at a different depth. Maybe someone will chime in thats did this before. I have one for a modified somewhere but, if it wouldn't work, then it wouldn't do you any good.
i believe you will need one with 164 teeth it does have to be to a 460 only because they have a bigger diameter. i tried several befoe i learned this. you will also need a 460 bell houseing. if you use a 351/400 houseing you will need to put a spacer inbetween the trani and bell houseing. something like a thick washer will work. if you do not run the spacer you run the input shaft to far in the back of the crank and lock everything up. not fun to do when you are expecting to start it for the first time and you find out that it is locked up and have to tear it all apart to find out why.
Here is the setup im running now i have a 78 ford f150 4X4 I have a 72 460 in it. Im running a 390 flywheel with a 11" metalic disc clutch. i am using a 351-400 m bellhousing, starter and pilot bearing and yes the pilot bearing does tap right into the 460 crank. The only thing on the tranny you would have to modify would be the nose cone or the tube the throwout bearing rides on it would need shortened to 2 1/2" from the base if you dont trim this it will bind your clutch disc and your moter will not turn. No spaceing needed. You can also buy billit 460 flywheels that will work will work with all the 351-400 m stuff the same way. But you can upgrade to a 12 inch clutch Warning you can fit a 12" diaphram style clutch im the 400 m bell housing but a 12" 3 finger will not fit it has a higher clearence. I know this is alot of info but its better than finding out the hard way. And i have 3 different 78 ford trucks with this setup and i have no problems.
