Need some help on spindle specs. Do the 1.5 ton trucks use the same as the .5 ton trucks? Are there any places to get a set of front shocks for my truck. My ultimate plan is to convert the front to disc brake. If that is not possible I will go back to the original drum I guess. Thanks for any advise you all can give me.
Front spindles are different, if i recall correctly. The 1/2 and one ton shared the same spindle and I beam, while the bigger trucks use a different spindle.
You are correct 46fordtruck. The 1 tons spindle are smaller and have a little different build compared to the 1.5 ton. Here is a pic of a 1 ton spindle. I wish I would of taken pics of the 1.5 ton when I had them apart yesterday.
As for brakes. Be sure to rebuild the wheel cylinders or get new ones as the old ones are probably all gummed up with crap and the rubber in them is probably dried and cracked. The shoes you can take to your local parts dealer and have them sent off to get re-lined if there is no damage to the shoe itself. Also, when you put the re-padded shoes on, be sure to turn the adjusters on the backside of the backing plate so that the shoes are released all the way back or you will have a heck of a time trying to put the drum back on.
Hi Scott, I have a reprint of the Ford shop manual and the specs for a 1 Ton starting 1940 are: Front brake drum dia 12'' Rear brake drum dia 14''
Front axle wheel cylinder piston dia: foward shoe 1.25'' reverse shoe 1''
Rear axle wheel cylinder piston dia: foward shoe 1.375'' reverse shoe 1.375''.
I can't help you with the lug nut pattern, I have a 1.5 ton (building this one) and a 3ton (parts truck) the pattern on these are the same.
