Early December I got my oil and oil filter changed at the local Wal-Mart in Sheboygan WI.. For the past couple months I could always smell oil burning when I got out of my (diesel) truck. I figured the guys at the Wal-Mart garage spilled a little when they did the oil change and I left it at that. I live in Wisconsin and I figured its to cold to try and cleanup their spill.
Well today when I was doing some other maintenance I thought I would clean up the spilled oil because I could still smell oil when I turned off the motor. I got some old rags, some degreaser and a bucket of water. So I opened the hood, climbed up on my ladder, and looked, and looked, and looked for the spilled oil, and I could not find a thing.
So then I thought I’d clean my battery terminals as long as I was in there, and low-and-behold lodged by the left side battery was my oil filler cap, those dumb a$$es never put the oil cap back on when they changed my oil. So I put it back on, drove 20 miles round trip, no more oil smell.
I checked and my oil looks good, but I wonder if this could of damaged anything internally, and how would you ever prove they did it.

Just another reason to steer clear of WalMart if your going to pay someone else to do your oil changes! Dealer costs $94 buck for a Diesel oil change at the dealer! At least they know what the heck they are doing! As far as damage......probably none if the oil level never went down. I hate Wal Mart when it comes to auto repair/maintenance, I've heard tons of horror stories!
The only thing I get from Wally world is Rotela and Motorcaft oil filters because they are the cheapest. Other than that try to stay away from that place. Watched all the tv shows about them.
The last place I'd bring anything with four wheels for service is Wally World. As a matter of fact I wouldn't even want them checking air pressure on my vehicles.
One snowy day 2 years ago I wnt to Wally World to have my oil changed on my Grand Prix. The yo-yo doing the oil change almost wrecked my car as he was pulling into the garage due to the snowy parking lot. Then he changed the oil, only thing that went well, then he took off my old wiper blades and folded them up to throw away. lo and behold they did not have new wiper blades in the store.I wanted to kill him. They were able to install a poor substitute until I could get home and get the right ones. Also while they were under the hood they removed some cladding to try to get to the oil filter from the top, well they forgot to reinstall a few bolts. Never again will I go there for an oil change.
Now that everyone is done with their rant about your choice... The answer to your question is probably not. The oil filler is pretty well protected under the hood and unless you were driving in some very extreme environments no water or significant dirt would have gotten there. But, if you're worried, change the oil again.

Take care,

Thanks, that’s what I wanted to know.
I like to change my own oil, but not in the middle of winter.
I let wal-mart change my oil a few times because I was always busy and didn't have the time sometimes. Well...the last time they changed my oil, it took them an hour and 15 minutes!
Watching them through the window, they (including my "service advisor"), were standing around talking as if I weren't there. The icing on tha cake: when they finally started to work on my truck, they didn't seem to know how much oil to put in...
When they finally finished, I very firmly asked the chick who did my paperwork what took so long. Her response: "Sometimes if you come in the evenings the service is a liiiittle slow." I paid, said thank you, and filed a compaint the next day. They gave me a $25 gift card which covered the cost of the oil change...Lesson learned, I'm doing it my damn self no matter how busy I am.
Minimum wage workers often don't put their heart into what they are doing and who can blame them. Do all that stuff yourself.
Absolutely !! Not sure about the gas engines but the 7.3L in the Ex is one of the easiest vehicles to change the oil in there is.....filter is vertical and easy to get to...doesn't drain all over the x-members etc.....you don't need to even jack it up if you are 4x4 !!.....it is not cheap....but it is easy.
Walmart is cheapest for Rotella Full Synthetic and motorcraft powerstoke filters that I run.........I do get my batteries there.....reasons you ask ?best warranty, no questions asked for warranty and no matter where I can take a wrong turn and end up in a Walmart parking lot....there is a Walmart nearby if you need a new one.

I just got my X a couple of months ago. It has the V10. I was pleasently surprised to see the oil filter hanging verticle right next to the oil pan drain plug when I did the oil change this weekend. It is night and day better than my 06 Ford F-150 which was just replaced by the X which you had to be a contortionist to get to the filter and there was no way you'd ever hardly get a wrench on it.
