97 Ranger - turning on heater drops temp gauge to "C"
97 Ford Ranger. Cranks up, reaches operating temp in about a mile. BUT, when you turn the heater on, the heater blows cold air and immediately the temp gauge goes all the way back down to "C". However, sometimes it will reach operating temp, blow hot air, no problems. Other times it will run 20-30 miles and, according to the gauge, the temp will start to climb up above normal. It does have some coolant loss, from time to time, (not always), but I cannot tell where it is leaking. I had a guy flush the system last year, and he did find a problem with the blend door, but after fixing it, the thing would run you out, it was so hot. I replaced the engine thermostat back last summer (water inlet pipe was leaking), so, I replaced the thermostat too. Now this. I have driven this thing hard for as many as 40 miles, and the heater would not get hot. Other times, it will go from blowing hot air to cold, and then back to hot. Absolutely crazy. What gives? Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks
John
Right now I'd suspect the thermostat.
When the temp gauge indicates the engine temp has dropped back to "C", does the upper radiator hose feel warm, or too hot to comfortably hold????
