This is something that I've thought about for a while, and I keep finding more examples. They're 'improving ' our vehicles to the point that we can't control them any more.
Some examples
There was a traction control thread on the 09 F150 forum.Seems that you CAN turn off traction control, but it keeps re enabling when you pass through some speed.
Another thread today mentioned that the only way to gain control of your dash lights was to cover the sensor that checks the ambient light.
Non Ford
I rented a small yoda while my truck was in the shop. Never did figure out everything that it did. I know that I did not have direct control of the headlights, and often the door locks. Things just happened. Fortunately, I survived.
I just read about a new mopar ignition system plan. Like many others, they are thinking of a wireless 'key' that you can keep in your pocket. But, it gets better. When you press the start button, it 'SENDS A MESSAGE' to the vehicles control system. If everybody is happy ( and this might include tire pressure sensors), then it will 'INITIATE THE START SEQUENCE'.
(Don't go all mopar on this, Fomoco may well follow).
It's my vehicle, sometimes there may be reasons why I want to do something odd. Give me a break.
and other "improvements" are done because the drivers are such brain dead twits that without those safety features, they would follow the car in front of them off a cliff.
even though that would be a good thing most of the time.
So damned many people are willing to pay for all this crap and that makes it tough for those of us who don't want / need the frivilous BS.
Case in point. When th e '09 F-150 was first coming out, so many people on that forum went out and ordered and bought Platinums and KR's. Nice rig but why would need all that crap on a truck?

Well said, why would you need anything higher than XLT trim level?.....Its sad when you see these pricey trim level trucks 4 years later on the used lot with the interiors trashed and mostly non-functional in the gizmo dept.
> you can't get a manual transmission in any ford pickup truck any more
The sad thing is something like 20% of the people know how to drive standards, even less own them. I would hazard a guess most of them probably drive imports.
Same thing with regular cabs, so few people want them, trying to resell a regular cab can be a big chore.

You bet! And, and, the stealership still wants premium prices for the used loaded up rigs weather that crap works or not.
My old '88 4x4 is an XLT Lariat with 5spd, intermittent wipers, a/c, dual tanks and two tone paint. Everything works and te funniest thing is, people ask me all the time if I'm selling it. Problem is, the truck is worth more to me than it's actually worth.
same here Tim.
i was working in the garage yesterday afternoon, and some guy comes walking up the driveway. he said "i see the old white ford sitting in the same place for over 9 months, and want to buy it, what do you want for it??"
i told him $25 grand.
as his jaw hit the ground, i said it is not currently for sale. that truck makes $100 per hour when it snows. if you want it, you will have to pay to replace it.
needless to say, he said nothing else as he walked away.
incorrect.
you can't get a manual transmission in any ford pickup truck any more.
not sure if 09 or 2010 was the last year for a hand shaker.
Hand shaker is available on Ranger...and Super Duty through the 2010 model year. Not easy to find a SD with a stick...but...there are a few out there. Sadly...the 2011 Super Duty will no longer have a standard as an option.
