In looking at Edmunds.com both engines return identical mileage 12/14/16(city/combined/highway). I thought the 3V was supposed to do better on gas or is only giving you more HP and more TQ which looking at these specs is only at higher RPM's. So is the 3V really a better engine. I guess if you had a choice of identical Expy's, same year, mileage and options and one was a 2v and one was a 3v for the same price is the 3v a NO brainer or is it what ever floats your boat. I'm sure it might be worth more since newer design but would you spend more money to buy a 2005 over a 2003 just to get the 3v. thanks
I think they had an upgraded transmission attached to 2005 5.4 as well. That might make the choice a little easier.
However, for me, the purchase price would be the primary concern. A couple thousadn bucks would be more important than a couple MPGs.
If the prices are close, "close" being highly subjective, then go with the 3-valve. It will have a lot more performance/upgrade options due to use in the similar 04 and newer F-150. The 03 and 04 Expy used a unique engine management system different from the previous generation (pre 03) and different from 05 and newer with the 3-valve.
Alloro, since you are everyone's king of drive lines - isn't the '05 just a regular 4R100?
Where did you get that idea? Drive lines are my weakest link. I know enough to get by and offer some help, but I'm hardly very knowledgeable in the area.
You are always in the thick of the drive line discussions related to awd / 4wd / 2wd. Actually, you are in the thick of most discussions come to think of it...
