sounds like the valves are clapping

hey guys my 2001 7.3 superduty diesel sounds like the vavle start clapping very bad and loud when i accelerate i know these motors are loud to start with but idle sounds good but as i take off and running it claps/taps more like a vavle clap. dealer tells me over phone that glow plugs are bad but it does not smoke at all and if its plugged in on cold nights it starts fine, it does not die after it starts nor does it have a motor miss...this truck only has 88,000 miles on it

How long have you had the truck? If you've had it for a while, has it gotten louder over time? Does it do this with the engine warm? The valves can get pretty loud when its cold. Glow plugs wouldn't have much to do with this since they warm the air to aid combustion during cold starts.

The dealer is probably trying to get money off of you. Most of them don't understand our trucks and throw parts at them.

I wasn't going to post this update until next week, but it seems the need has arisen beforehand.
I'm going through the same thing right now with my truck.
Engine knocking at camshaft speed and if you manipulate the throttle the sound changes, even if the engine speed doesn't
I even made a recording of it and posted it on youtube.
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...e-worried.html
This is the story so far on what is going on.
Apperently it's a common problem for these engines to bend pushrods, so I called NAPA to order up a set and replace them all.
Pushrods are inexpensive so it's not like throwing money down the drain.
While I was on the phone with the counter guy at NAPA, he told me that he used to work for Ford and he personally replaced a lot of rocker arms on the 7.3 because they would wear out on the pivot and start to make noise.
I took that information and ordered a full set of rocker arms and they will be here by this weekend and I will be replacing all 16 whether they need it or not.
Rockers and pushrods are cheap compared to pulling the head and replacing broken lifter retainers.
I'll keep you all posted on the outcome.

Thanks Dan. I will be looking forward to the outcome. That is something I may do if it helps your problem. I don't have the knocking right now, but if I can prevent it I will.

Hopefully everything will be here by Friday afternoon and I will put them in on Saturday.
BTW, I called International about getting some rockers and they only showed 3 of one side in the entire system.
So I had to call Ford and get them from them. $26.00 vs $16.00 per rocker, but I didn't want to wait because this issue really has me concerned after reading about bent pushrods and broken lifter retainers on another thread.

Do you get the same noise when the fuel tank is full? Mine seem to make more noise at a quarter full fuel tank or below. Makes me want to do the fuel tank mods....

I'm gonna pull my VC's today or tomorrow to re-torques everything, but I might just pull a few rockers to check them out.

Sure would like to see the difference in the old vs. new rockers. If I somehow miss Dan's thread, someone please alert me cuz I've got some questions and am curios if this is something I should be doing.

I don't doubt Dan's knowledge at all, but a NAPA guy who used to work at Ford doesn't impress me. After all the Ford guy told the OP in the first post here that it was the glow plugs causing the noise.

reason ford may have told him is that if glowplugs are bad... on a cold start with no glow plugs (cold cyl) it could cause a louder than normal knock/rattle. Plus its winter time and glowplugs are probably bringing in more than normal amount of trucks. then again the guy at ford could not have the first clue about these trucks.... just sayin.
