I am looking for a donor for parts for my '56 pickup project. I am looking to make it into a 4x4 and have found a pretty decent deal with parts from a '97 F-250HD.
Problem is I know nothing about them, or if they're parts are ideal or even really usable for my project.
I had planned on the front being a straight axle, but the truck has IFS and I'm not sure how difficult that will be to adapt to my '56 F-600. I was also told this year was a bit squirrely.
But since I don't really know anything about the year or model, I thought I'd ask people who do, lol. Things to look out for or know about in the supension and axles?
I will be running 36-40" tires on there, I have heard that these will be too much for the front... trying to figure out what all is true and what is just the internet...
difficult to adapt that engine and 4x4 parts to that narrow frame. you would be better off in the long run to use a small block 302 or 351w. narrow drivetrain and many parts available. a fuel injection setup in a '87 or later doner bronco or truck with all the 4x4 parts would be my choice. i would even consider a bronco and put you truck body on that frame. you might check the body mount widths ect. you can by 87 to 96 broncos pretty cheap. good luck!
I just noticed, you have a 56 ford f600.........never mind! Sorry I thought you where talking about a f100.
I think I'd like to have at least a 351w, the windsor always seemed like the way to go. The Bronco however has too short of a wheel base, and I'm not sure the axles will prove to be strong enough for what I'd like. It be easier to get some f-250 or larger axles because I can use the leaf spring suspension easier, as my truck is already made for them.
But I've decieded the IFS front axle is probably going to prove to be a major PITA, and I'd like something stronger anyways.
