Ignition problem?

Hey, I have a 1988 Bronco with the 300 CI inline 6 with EFI and manual 4spd with overdrive, and I have been having a problem, I think with the ignition system. While driving, and only when driving, the truck will surge and jerk rapidly like it was not getting fuel and then getting it all at once. I can push in the clutch and give it some gas and nothing will happen then it will rev up for a bit then cut out again. All the electrical systems still work when the engine cuts out, by "all" I mean the radio, lights, heater and things in the cab. Sometimes it surges and jerks so violently that it will stall the engine. I have replaced the battery that was going out, replaced the in-tank fuel pump, fuel filter, and taken it to a mechanic. All that the mechanic said was that he thought it was some problem with the ignition, and how all of a sudden the engine stopped getting any igntion. So if anybody has ever had or heard of this problem and knows how to fix it, please let me know!

Welcome to FTE and the Big Bronco Forum. We will endeavor to get you the most accurate information we can muster.

Your 88 can be diagnosed with KOEO and KOER tests to the engine. However, without the engine running, a KOER test is impossible. (KOER=Key On Engine Running) the KOEO (Key On Engine Off) test will yield some information that could determine what has gone haywire. Check HERE! for information about how both tests are administered.

With no spark at all I'd look to the ignition coil first along with any associated wiring including plug wires, cap and rotor.

You might also make certain you haven't got a failed fuel pressure regulator. Its a small vacuum diaphragm pot on the driver's side of the fuel rail. If you remove the vacuum line to it and there is fuel in it, you need to replace it.
